Hi, new to forum, great site BTW very informative.
We got a 2001 1.4 petrol which we have had since 1yr old. been a good school taxi with no major probs.
However recently had engine light on and then other day ALL warning light stayed on until ign removed and re inserted.
I have a VAG COM (I also have 2 Passats and others in the family  )
Came up with errors:-
5 Faults Found:
17645 - Fuel Injector for Cylinder 1 (N30): Open Circuit
P1237 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17647 - Fuel Injector for Cylinder 3 (N32): Open Circuit
P1239 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17646 - Fuel Injector for Cylinder 2 (N31): Open Circuit
P1238 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17961 - Barometric / Manifold Pressure Signals: Implausible Correlation
P1553 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17912 - Intake Air System: Leak Detected
P1504 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
1 Fault Found:
01314 - Engine Control Module
79-10 - Please Check Fault Codes - Intermittent
2 Faults Found:
01314 - Engine Control Module
49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent
01760 - Power Steering Control Module (J500) No comm. with Engine Control Module (ECM)
49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent
Car was running OK.
Now last night i clear codes took car out for a blast (only gets used on school runs), got near home, revved engine high while stationary and a rattling started  got back home (drove OK) and inspected cam belt. All looks fine. started it up and drove OK.
Today, missus goes to work and on return loses power and engine is 'rattling'
I immediately thought cam belt had slipped or lost some teeth and the nosie was the valves out of timing.:(
I got home and listened - not convinced - noise seems to be from rear of engine - INTAKE manifold - LEAK ??
Sorry for the ramblings, but I use the VW forums (esp. for the Passats - as these have their 'moments' also!) but as much info may help before I start stripping the motor down.
I MAY ALSO SUSPECT ECU IS DYING
Help apreciated. Cheers and keep up the good work on the site,
Angelo
