Flat Tyre

Had a flat tyre this morning (hit a puthole in the road)

However mine doesn't have a spare tyre.

so put that tyrefixing stuff in from Audi, tried to inflate it, but nothing happend:mad:

OK

called the wife, As i have some special tyre welt in her car

hour later she arrives, but no, didn't work either

so quickly jacked it up took the wheel off and what did i see...

the whole tyre had come off the rimm at the back

so no tyre welt would have helped here

and off i went to find a tyre place to help me

found one just one mile down the road

but now the real problem start
185/50r16

Sorry m8 we do not stock that one, maybe the one down the road

so i went with the wife to 5 tyre places arround dorking and leatherhead

and finanly i found one, cost me Gbp 76 to fix it (and the whole morning)

SO the short story here is

Very soon you will find some nice 16inch alloys on ebay

I will upgrade to 17inch

Don't think the grass is greener - I split my front offside sidewall on Saturday afternoon, again a pothole was to blame.

5 establishments later, I found one and had it fitted for £120!!!

The thing that annoys me is that the exact same place has a book online facility and the same tyre is £85 fitted if you do it this way.

My tyres are 215/40 YR 17s by the way.

Cheers,

Mike

yep the tyre place said its better to go to 15 inch, but that is to small

so i have to find a sensible 17 inch tyre

I normally have low profiles under my car ,but i will not do that under the A2

the audi stuff is but the proper tyrewelt is pretty good

I think i will upgrade to some

17 inch A8 style alloys

does anybody know the offset for our A@ 1.4tdi

and what kind of rubber do you guys recommand, i do not want to low profile,

Havank, if you are going to go along the 17" route, you'll have no choice but to use low profile tyres. To give you an example, I have 215/40 tyres fitted, which although they don't rub, are so tight to the arches that I cannot get my fingers between the liner and tyre on full lock!

If you were to go down to a 205, it'd be touch and go whether you could get a 45% tyre on and a 50% would certainly not fit.

If you went to a 195, then the tyre would be too narrow for the average 7J rim width and you are then playing a dangerous game, especially when cornering.

My recommendation would be to stick with 16" wheels and carry a spare.

Cheers,
Mike

I did indeed have Tank lowered, but my 215/40 tyres were put on, all round, when the car was on its original springs and they were tight then.

You certainly won't be able to fit something like a 205/50, not without rubbing issues.

Cheers,

Mike

you got me scratching my head now

I wan't something more commenly available, but what still gives a nice ride

what about 15" then??

and what is the offset

How about sticking with 16" wheels, but changing to say a 195/50 or a 195/45 which are far more common tyres?

Cheers,

Mike

I am coming round to sticking with them

so a full size 16 will fit in the boot (underneed the subfloor))

I've not tried it myself, but heard that others have with success.

Perhaps one of those would confirm here.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Havank
The 16" wheel with standard 185 section tyre will just fit in the boot but it lifts the false floor about 20mm. I cut some rigid foam strips and fixed them with double sided tape along the support rails so the floor sits level.

Cheers Spike

i run on 195,50,r16 & they seem quite readily available and quite well priced at 92.00 a pair fitted inc vat. the most recent puncture i had was well sorted with the audi goo.

Seems like the choice is an easy one after all Havank - stick with the 16" rims (I still prefer 6 spoke wheels to the standard sport 9-spokers, and they don't bend as easily) and fit 195/50 tyres.

Cheers,

Mike
