View Full Version : flywheel vibration
Can anyone tell me why it happens--what can be done--and if it needs a new flywheel how you can tell that the new one will not cause problem

Hi Dick
You have not given us much info to go on but I think you have the 90tdi which has a dual mass flywheel. Check out the link for more info on symptoms etc. These flywheels are complex bits of kit with more to go wrong than the conventional flywheel so there will be some risk of problems with a replacement. Having said that, the design life should be at least 100K miles.

Mine is being replaced under warranty - symptoms first appeared about 27k miles, as a shaking which built up to the point where the whole car shook! The shaking disappears as the clutch is depressed though.
The dealer was reticent at first wo diagnose as a flywheel problem, but after insistence (they said it was a blocked injector! - how the clutch can affect this I don't know) they admitted I was right (again!) and said that the car would be sorted when I was ready (they wanted to do it there and then, but they'd had it a week for other warranty work and I explained that I really would like to drive my own car for a while).
So, it's soon to be engine out, gearbox out, split them and replace the flywheel - think I'll ask for the clutch to be done at the same time.
Cheers,
Mike

I have just had mine done under warranty. The Audi dealer (Reading) didnt really want to accept the problem until i badgered them every day.
New clutch and flywheel, all perfect now. I couldnt put up with the car vibrating!
Do not deal with Reading Audi, you have been warned!
RE--dicks vibration
1--its not much--only at tick over and I THINK only when cars at an angle
2-- the car is 3 years old though not yet done 15,000
I can live with it at the moment but am wondering if its going to get worse--this was why I wanted to know what the cause was--wear will get worse but if its just balance problem it may remain as it is
I should have said--its a 90-storm

I certainly hope these dual mass flywheels last a lot longer than 100K especially with the amount of work and possible cost (if out of warranty) if this is underataken by a stealer. Can the gearbox just be dropped without removing the engine, at least that would reduce the amount of work neccesary???

The ZF dual mass flywheel link in a previous post does not work any more so for anyone interested in the internals, check out this link and click on 'design' for more details

Originally I assumed all TDi's had this type of flywheel but as someone pointed out, the 75 and 90 diesels have different part nos so it's probably only fitted to the more powerful engine. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Does anybody know who manufactures the genuine Audi part?
Is it ZF or some other company?
Are there any benefits to changing the dual mass to solid flywheel?

Sorry I don't know who supplies the Audi flywheel . If they have a suitable model, I think Luk dual mass flywheels are a lot cheaper than the genuine part
The only benefits of going to a solid flywheel would be lower cost. The negative is the risk of increased driveline gear 'chatter' due to the reduced torsional damping.

I have noticed under closer inspection the car shakes a fair bit when cold, however this is increased when the clutch pedal is not pressed.
How does the dual mass flywheel work? Does it keep on rotating even when the clutch is pressed in, (that is when the shaking feels less)
Maybe the problem is more sinister....
The flywheel turns with the engine, all the time. It's bolted to the engine crank.
Cold shaking is normal for our 3 cylinder diesel. When the clutch is not pressed, the vibrations from the engine travel better to the rest of the car, causing a more potent vibration.
There's no need to worry.:)

I've been suffering these symptons for a while. I'm not mechanically minded, so it appears that you've all got tdi's? Mines the 1.6fsi......is it possible to have the same problem with the fsi and the tdi?
Another reason I am considering jumping ship!
