View Full Version : rattle and management light
Hi,
I have just bought my a2 1.6FSI.It is a 02 model. I am really happy with it but have 2 questions.Firstly just realised engine management light stays on (it doesnt flash just stays illuminated)although car seems to be running fine.Is it meant to stay on?
Second...When i rev the car there is a rattle (from under the bonnet) as the revs drop off. This is standstill or on the move, but only as revs are falling and if i accelerate it goes.Makes me think somethings vibrating.Any ideas?
Id appreciate any help. Will help me sleep tonite...Thanx

Hi there,
Me too, - am a recent owner of a 1.6 FSI Sport and now have engine management light on permanently, have spotted it flashing at one point. Garage say it's a misfire on Cyl 3 & 4 and could do with new plugs and possibly coils - Anybody else had this problem ?? Engine doesn't seem to pull in the right way.
Slightly confused.
Cheers

Hi. Have an '04 53 1.6FSI. About 1 month ago (just after a Service) light on & Coil pack 4 diagnosed as misfiring - car running fine & no suggestion of misfire - plugs replaced during service. Changed immediately for non genuine coil (as no genuine ones available) & code cleared. Good Friday light back on & diagnosis this time is misfire on cylinders 1, 2 & 4!!! - Car running fine & no suggestion of misfire. All 3 coils replaced (4 under warranty), light reset. Drove off garage forecourt & got into 3rd gear & light back on. Back to garage & diagnosis was misfire on 1,2 & 4!!!
Sorry boys I don't believe you.
Off elsewhere for scan to check out condition of Cat & Oxy sensors in exhaust, also for ECU checkout, before returning to original lot for refund on 3unnecessary coil packs.
They claim that originals are on back order (whether or not this is true I don't know), but I dont think these lads are using the diagnostic tools they have with any effect. Its too easy to keep dishing out components & raking in the cash.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Unfortunately, there would appear to be a massive shortage of these, by all accounts.

Engine management light on can mean many possible 'faults' - some important some not so.
My Skodas (1.8 petrol Turbos) often had it on (for months at a time with no ill effect). If you had a coil pack go you would know all about it - the car would run like a 'pig'.
For your own piece of mind you can get it checked out - but better to find an independent with a code reader (or a member with the relevant software) - rather than a dealer who will probably use it as an opportunity to replace anything vaguely justifyable!!

Hi Boys.
I've found it & I told you this wasn't a coil pack. I got some excellent 'no bull****' sense from GN motors in Heckmondwike (01924 408621) regarding the diagnoses I had been given (via York Audi & a certain independent VW/Audi 'specialist' in Leeds - wont say who, but I'm sure you'll know 'em).
I managed to trace it to a small air leak on the seal between the cam cover and the plastic boss that the oil filler cap screws onto. This leak was causing a lean misfire (undetectable when driving - but the ECU could see it). The clue came when GN reset all the ECU adaptive control parameters & the fault went away for a week, but eventually came back. During that week when all was fine & my car was running off its map & 'learning' its adaption values again, my fuel consumption went from a previous regular 45mpg to a best of nearly 60!! (on a 1.6FSI remember).
Doing a bit of rooting around, I pulled the oil filler cap & boss off & noticed it felt a bit loose, saw some oil staining on the cam cover outside where the seal sits & thought 'That aint right'.
I tensioned the spring lugs up on the boss & fitted a new seal & the management light went off after 50 yards & aint been back on for nearly 3 weeks now. So I make that DC-1: Audi-Nil. Audi coil packs £120 per set; Oil seal £1.43. You choose!
By the way, the independent 'specialist' in Leeds 'got his coil packs back' & I got my money back - I was happy; he wasn't - if he had put some effort into his diagnostics (actually lifting the bonnet would have been a good start) he might still have a customer. Specialists 'My Arse'

Do you know what code this fault threw up? - my 1.4 petrol has a similar reappearing engine light - which was reset by the dealer for £120 and then came on three days later to no apparent ill effect on the runnning

Suggest you demand your £120 back or a free permanent fix.
Re-setting the ecu takes about 2 minutes and it sounds like that is all they did!

I believe TT's had a similar problem with misfiring due to the coil packs actually being pushed up off the plugs due to the rubber seals on the coil packs trapping air which then expanded when the engine heats up(Serious/no joke).
This has been remedied by some of the owners by cutting a small Vee(1-2mm) in the rubber seals down the length of the coil-pack to allow the trapped air to vent.
Maybe give this a try and see what happens.
