I bought a used Concert headunit from ebay for some prototyping. The question is, can I power it up at home with a 12V dc? The leads in the A2's console are so short, it is impossible to work in the car - with two hands holding a multi-meter poking inside a opened headunit...
secondly, I don't have the code, will it still operate? After some research, there is no decoder for the concert, has anyone tried to obtain a code from the dealer and how much?

You can power it up on a bench yes, although without CAN wiring, the range of functions may be limited.
As for codes, Audi will supply you with a code free of charge as long as it's your ORIGIAL radio. In this case, don't be surprised if they charge you in the region of £40.

thanks for the tip skipton, but I actually meant to ask which two pins out of the four connectors at the back do I have to wire up the 12v dc? I have the pin out but doesn't seem to show up anything appropiate.

Can't remember off-hand - but to avoid any mistakes, you're best off putting a meter across the connector, whilst powered up to se what's what.

found it! So for anyone who might need to test a concert I/II at home. +12v to pin 7 and ground to pin 8 on connector III (the one which has Gala and telephony mute). You'll still need the security code, otherwise the radio says 'SAFE'. I eventually took my original radio. Everything seems to work, FM/AM/Tape, mine was coded to Bose so there is no speaker out, but line outs.
Next question for anyone who's better than me in AC electronics! The unit uses a TDA7342 audio processor which has CD + 2 other analogue inputs (tape and tunner). The max input is said to be 2.6Vrms, so if I attach a standard line level output to the chip (via the capacitor already there), will I blow it?
