View Full Version : Cupholder box in front of rear seats - question?

Johann
01-03-2003, 08:59 PM
As part of the sapce box you get this rear box included with cupholders (http://www.audi-a2.co.uk/europe24.htm). My (maybe stupid) qustion is thus: can the rear seats still fold normal with this in place? How much is this box from Audi?

Hi,
this cupholder is in Germany part of the "multibox- system".
That means, the spacefloor box and the clip-on cupholder box with integrated storage box is one set.
It is it not possible to fold up the rear seats with the mounted middle area cupholder box ! :(
But its very easy to remove the part.
Some pictures about this see European owners gal. no. 24 (my Audi A2).

Best regards

Thanks Alu2000... that is why I used your picture page as a reference. ;) I won't buy the cupholder box then. I love the fact that I can tumble the seats without having to remove the headrests. Having to remove cupholders to do that is not worth it. I rarely have people in the back anyway... Thanks

Removing the cupholders to fold the seats takes all of about 2 seconds. The box is held in place by a mounting bracket and you just push a button to release it and lift it out. Believe me, still get one, it's very handy and just slots in and out VERY easily. Cost me about £32 inc VAT.

That's a good price, I paid £32+VAT from my Audi garage :(

Regards fitting, now I've got my camera (and I've still got to fit the rear bracket properly) I'll do it this weekend and send the photos in for everyone. I have still got the fitting instructions the Audi garage gave me, so I'll try to take a photo of those (or scan them) so you can see what's involved.

BTW Stu, do I not get a commission from VAGPARTS for them using MY photo? ;) I guess I'd better get that 10% discount then!

:D EVERY A2 ( and I think actually every Audi) is already wired for heated mirrors. Take your mirrors off and you will see the wires just hanging there with nothing to do... so go to mr audi and buy a pair of heated mirrors (just the glass) for less than £60 and viola: you have HALF a winter pack! They work perfectly in winter by switching on automatically below 5 degrees or when you switch the rear demister on (the manual says this is not the case, but when I drive in the rain now, I switch the demister on and in 3 minutes the mirrors are clear...)

As to the box... thanks guys... I'll go buy a beige on for my black car! [}:)] Just kidding... I'll get a black one!

Shezlee, wrt the rear bolts, did you just poke through the carpet, or did you remove the rear seats to be sure? Was there anything already in the holes or were they just empty?

you need to remove the rear seats, lift the carpet and remove two bolts, these hold the seat bracket in place, then you poke the new bolts through the carpet in to the now clear holes.

Well, finally got some time today to try to fit the rear bracket. Removed the rears (for the 1st time ever, surprised me how easy it was) and easily got straight to the screws and thought 'b****r, what kind of head is that on that bolt?'. I guess I need to buy some 'star' screwdrivers then as I only have the standard philips/crosshead stuff.

Hey, ho, nearly there. I guess I might ask Mr. Audi to pop outside and undo it for me when I go past next time instead.

The same happened to me-I kept finding the petrol flap open and couldn't work out why-until I realised that when I squeezed in and out of tight spaces in car parks I brushed my leg against the button.

Don't know what the solution is-now you know you do it the you can always climb in through the other door each time!!!!!.

Seriously I don't know-you can't disable the button otherwise it's a pain to open the flap. unles you can build something around the button to stop your leg then I don't know!.

I was really keen on buying the cup holders for the rear seat, and the info on the forum has been most useful, fitting instructions etc.I was just about to buy. Then my wife said "what do you want that for, the dog (holly, geddit?)is the only occupant of the rear seat and she can't use a cup". Womens logic is inescapable some times.

Well, I finally fitted the rear bracket, a doddle really. Used a T35 to remove the old bolts and a T45 to put the new ones in (this differs to installation guide, I wonder if the bolts in mine were different, might be something to think about??). I'm looking at what else I can fit now along the lines of:

Audi Rear door window blinds (already spoken to Martyn at VAG parts).
Front grill strips (from ABT, already spoken to James).
Carpeted tray under handbrake (from VAG parts - dependent upon how shezlee gets on)
Heated door mirrors (from VAG parts - was someone doing this?)

I was that one that got everyone to do it as I did it about year ago! It is a doddle... you take out the old mirrors, plug the wire that is already there into the new ones and clip in... et voila... heater mirrors just ready for summer and you ahve to wait months before you know if they actually work or not!!! (That happened to me and it took ages before I bought the second mirror - I just did one to "test" it... and only after months I was going down the Blackwall Tunnel one night when it got all steamy in the middle of the tunnel - pressed the demister button and the passenger mirror cleared in 2 minutes whilst the driver's stayed steamed up! I was over the moon and bought the second mirror the very next day...)

Now all I need is someone to to test and price the other half of the winter pack so I can have a full one... think it is possible?

:( I bought myself a T-40 thingy a few days ago knowing I'll need it for this excercise. Cupholders arrived this morning... check T-40 in the supplied bolts, perfect fit... start assembling things in the car, get seats out, lift carpet and... the existing two bolts in the car has a different design!!!! Grrr... so I couldn't fix the job tonight... :( Also didn't realise I had to somehow make two holes through the carpet... Anyone know what the number is for the screwdriver I have to get now? It looks smaller, but deeper than the T-40...

Johann,

I had EXACTLY the same problem. Firstly, re the carpet, I just poked scissors through.

Re the bolts, putting the news ones in I actually found the T45 fit better, but whatever.

Re taking the old ones out, it looks more like a 12 or more star design. I had to pop into my local Ford garage and get some nice man to remove them for me, none of my T bolts would do it. I am sure he used similar ones, but he had to bang the head in with a hammer to ensure that he could turn them without shearing them. After Lee did it so easily I thought perhaps mine just had weird bolts or I'd bought the wrong ones.

Don't know if this helps?

Went to Audi in the end and asked Harry - yes I even know my mechanics name, sad but true - to take old bolts out... then came home and fitted the rest of the kit in no time at all... Also discovered that the rear cupholders and the compartment behind it is actually very easily reachable from the driver's seat too!!! So they are not just for the rear people at all! I;m very chuffed. And as originally stated they do take out very easily to flip the seats...

Jesper: are you sure the seats can't come out at all? I've never sean the bench seat option... the twin ones are stiff to take out I agree, but once you learn that you must pull the rear handle quite hard AND you have to ensure that the seatback is perfect flat and as low as it will go, before these rear handles will actually work... But as I said, I don't know if the bench even has handles...

I think I may have confused matters, I used the T-30 to remove the old bolts as it was the largest one I had that fitted, and a T-40 to fit the new bolts the largest I own (It has been suggested that these should be T-35 and T-45) but can not confirm this.

Lee, I used the T45 to fit the new (looks like both would do the job then). I just couldn't get the T30 to undo my old ones. Did you mention a difference at the time between tapered and straight sided or something? Perhaps I bought the wrong ones. Now, there's a thought. Perhaps we ought to publish a 'handy tools to own for modifications to your A2' - mention the T bolts.

One thing I've just noticed. The front bracket on the cupholder, you didn't mention the screw underneath the ashtray which came with mine. Did you not have to screw this bracket into place? Perhaps it would be good to get clarification from VAGparts on exactly what comes in their 'kit'.

Ade,
I had 2 front brackets and no screws so the bracket is pushed in, seems to be quite firm.
I also mensioned the tapered and straight sided bits. Tapered bits are limited and rearly used they are more secure than straight from the point of DIY a straight bit will strip the bolts and therefor show signs of tampering.

No screws and 2 brackets - weird.

Agreed it was very firm before I screwed it, perhaps you could check for a screw hole (under the ashtray) next time you get in yours.

I did get 2 screws for the front bracket and the holes for them are visible when you take the ashtray out... I duly screwed them in, even though it fits firmly enough without them when you just slide the bracket in below the centre console... BUT I also got a part named "Adapter" 8Z0 864 455 for £2.42 that had no obvious place to go and is still not fitted?! the guide at http://www.audi-a2.co.uk/guides.htm shows TWO of these... I only got one and thus did not fit it... rear bracket seems fine without them though - IF that is where they are supposed to go that is...

T-40 was perfect for the new bolts... and again sorry for not getting the name of the old bolts!!!

<head hanging in shame>

Yip all supplied by Martin... Only now did I see on the invoice that it stated 2 of those adapters... I had one and thus no idea where it should go... But like I said, the rear bracket fitted fine and feels plenty sturdy enough...

I got all the right parts, but the the garage gave me an extra ashtray bit (£8) so I promptyly took it back for a refund. I guess we could do with nailing the parts list so that the fitting guide is pucka.

Mine certainly had screws to attach the front bracket, but only one bracket supplied.

And yes, I certainly forgot to ask the man at the Ford garage what he used to remove it in my eagerness.

This sketch does however not show any screws through nr 14 - though there are holes in it that lines up with the holes below the existing rear holder 12. But I received 2 screws to insert there... I think... as there was no other place for them!

I seem to have all the parts (and none left over now). To recap, Johann, you should have 2 of both 16, 24 and 25 to fit it all 'as intended'. Also the 2 screws through 14 are marked as 19, hence put them in there, Lee didn't get these, although he did get two '14's.

I got an additional '12' which I returned for a refund. It would be good to confirm that the VAG parts one includes all the parts marked with the purple stars in the right quantity.

Hence, the total part list should be:

1 x 13 (cupholder)
1 x 14 (front bracket)
1 x 15 (rear bracket)
2 x 16 (rear bracket supports)
2 x 19 (screws for 14)
2 x 24 (screws for 16)
2 x 25 (washers for 16/24)

Hope this makes sense

OK so who else has had trouble removing the old bolts from the rear seat brackets? A T30 they are not! But what are they, they are not security torx either? I resorted to jamming an allen key in at an angle, to get the little sods out. The washers, above or below the carpet? I went below so you cant see them, any views?

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I had to get a man at our local garage to undo them for me. I am unsure what they are. The replacements are definitely T45 (although a T40 works just as well). I placed my washers beneath the carpet (I'm not sure that Lee had any washers supplied with his as he didn't mention it).

Perhaps an Audi garage might be able to comment on what exactly they are so we can update the guide?

Mine did not disintegrate... but then mr audi used the right tool to take them off and he did so with no trouble at all... I'm still sorry that I never got the name!!!

I took my seats out before going to work and left the carpet etc open, then over lunch went over to Audi and asked them to undo the bolts, they did and that evening I finished the assembly process...

Using the wrong tools will only damage them and you may end up NEVER getting them out!!! Be careful!!!

I think they can be removed.

The system works with a special multi-sided key.
My 2000'Passat used the same system for the steering wheel.

I switched to leather and had to take the old one off. My dealer switched the steering wheels by using this special tool...

Lee/Ade - I was just having a look at Lee's fitting guide for the rear cup holder (I haven't actually had a proper read of it until now) and see that you need to take the rear seats out to fit it.

How easy is it to remove the seats?

Also, in the tools listing, you say that certain security bits are needed. Is this the 'star' shaped socket bits or something else?

Are you coming to the club social (http://www.audi-a2.co.uk/meet1.htm)?

Taking my seats out was the first thing I did after getting my car!!! Just because I could!

...it is very easy Stuart! Just tip the seat forward as normal and look at the hinges. You just push the seat forward a tiny bit and lift them up and out! Easy. And they (nearly) stand upright on their own if the headrests point up... Just make sure they are level in correctly in before you push the seats down again. Mine was not once and I completely bent the hinge... I could not understand why the seat did not want to clip back into the top bracket... something was just skew... took it in for service and asked them to look at it and they found the hinge was bent!

Stu, I didn't for a while either, but now I don't hesitate for a bit of 'modding'.

Instructions

To remove:

Choose a seat
Place end of seatbelt in holder slot in the C-pillar.
Find the seat handle (at top, near the window and lift - I'll call it 'top handle')
Push seat forward
Find handle at base of seat (almost in boot, you'll see it - I'll call it 'base handle').
Lean on the top of the seat back with one hand and pull on the base handle with other, you'll work it out in terms of pressure to apply, etc.
When releases it folds upwards.
Stop and have a look at the base of the seat in it's upright position. You'll see the retaining bracket and see how to remove the seat from it. Use the base handle you just used to act as a carry handle and lift the seat out (I find it better at a slight angle).

To replace:

Put seat back in at a slight angle again and be comfortable that it is in the clip as far forward as possible.
Fold it back down and press down at base of seat back.
The seat back will now not lift up until you then press on the top of the seat back and you hear it click (don't know why).
Lift up the seat to vertical (beware of trapping the seatbelt) and you may have to lift the top handle near window again.
Done

That is why there are special holders for the seatbelts in the C-pillars!!! That is actually step ONE!

...and I presumed Stuart has at least tipped his seats forward before! That is why my instructions started there! :D

Mmm, re seatbelt holders, I don't often use them as they take too long, they are very stiff on mine, but yes, point taken.

Fitted my rear c/holders today, so thanks everybody for all the tips.
It really is a superb piece of kit for the money, and looks a treat.
I've somewhere to put my water bottles at last!
Give credit where it's due, so well done Audi!!!

Nice one John, I agree they are very useful and can be easily accessed from the front seat, very handy for a bottle of water!
