Is it possible to have the cluster lights/speedo needles lit during the day?
I have seen this on the Audi A4.
Is there an option in vagcom?

There's no VAG-COM option, because of the type of instruments used.
However, you can either just turn on your sidelights or do a bit of wiring to enable daytime running lights.

...I have a 2002 1.4 TDi and the instrument needles (but not the background numbers) light when the ignition is turned on...and it's very good

The needles themselves on all A2s are always lit, regardless of the lighting switch. I presumed that the original question related to the dials too.

About daytime running lights
in germany there is a module available (also for the A2) that enables daytime running lights plus some other nice featers like comming home and leaving home (headlight delay)
see here the german thread
http://www.der-a2.de/vbtest/showthread.php?t=26871
THat sounds interesting - I like the idea of headlamp delay: my neighbour's got that on his E-class, where the foglights come on to guide him to his door.
Sadly, my German's strictly limited to asking where the hospital is, so I didn't get much out of the thread and the pdfs on the site. Anyone able to give the gist?

its a simple plug and play, and all is done in the fuse box, then the mainbeam switch is used to program it costs is about 69 euro's
Here is the german how to fit manual

and here is the german user manual (how to programm
http://www.daylightrunning.de/Programmierung_TFL.pdf
In germany it will be very shortly the law (give it two year's) to drive always with your lights on, so this is a simple way of doing it, the moment you go in your car, and you start your enginge the lights will go on, DAY LIGHT RUNNING
Some extra features are comming home, and leaving home, so the moment you stop the engine and you lock the car, the headlights remain on for a few seconds, and in reverse if you unlock the car, the lights come on
Now the most special feature......................
you can descide how much light you want to have, do you want it at 90%, 80% or even at 60% of the original light, so they claim you safe light bulbs
Hope this helps

I know, but I could always mod them to do the coming/leaving home with the fogs. DRLs are do-able without this little box of tricks.

Apparently there is a pin on the lightswitch called TFL - DRL, and this can be used to make the necessary connections, (don't ask me how though :D)

Correct!
Normally, it is un-occupied, but if you put the correct pin in there and connect the wire to one of the other pins, you will enable DRLs.
Just to clarify though, DRLs on the A2 are dipped beam headlights and sidelights, NOT sidelights alone.
I've tried to do this (sidelights alone) so that my S6 DRLs come on alone, but although it can be done, the bulb warning light comes on too, as the car thinks that the headlights are out!!
Cheers,
Mike
