The rear speakers on my 2003 A2 FSI have just started playing up.
I have narrowed it down to the small amp in the drivers footwell (model number 8Z0 035 223). At first I thought it was a dirty connection, but I think it must be a dry solder joint or broken track on the circuit board. If I flex the board a little, it starts working.

I think I have worked out what all the 10 pins connect to (interestingly there are 10 on the plug, but 12 on the amp!

So what can I replace this unit with?

I would idealy like something a bit better as the current sound was never fab, but I am aware that it needs to behave in the system.

Also can you buy the Audi connectors?

Does this amp have a permanent live feed? of so then why doesn't the battery drain?

Anything else I should know?

If you want a replacement, short term until you upgrade the amp, I have one here that I removed when I installed the Bose system.

Yours for £25 and I'm not a million miles away either.

Thanks Skipton, was really looking to upgrade, as everytime I get in my 9 year old V40 I realise how wooly the sound is on the A2. I am sure that the speakers can justify a better amp and that Malaysian transistor that currently powers them seems a bit of a shortcut.
Will any two channel car amp do? and are the plugs easy to come by so that I don't have to cut into the cars harness.

Speaking with my sound engineers hat on (that is my proper job!), if your rear speakers sound wooly, then something is very wrong with the setup, and the amp I have is a Blaupunkt, not a malaysian one.

Plugs are easy to come by yes, but the sockets are not, as they are part of the component - in this case the amp.

Cheers,

Mine is Blaupunkt, but it does say "Malaysia" on the aluminium casings sticker. Think I will take a trip down to the local car hifi place later today.

Perhaps muffled is a slight overstatement. To me it sounds OK at low volume, but try and get something with a bit of ooomph playing (not silly loud, its an Audi not a Nova, and I ain't 17 with Burberry attire!) and it sounds like any other stereo that is playing on the edge of it's limit, bass and treble clarity get lost.

Thanks for the advise so far, any further advise is really welcome.

I know that sound quality can come down personal preference but I would say that the stereo in my A2 is the best standard system that I have come across in all the cars that I have owned. Friends have also commented on how good it sounds when they have had a lift in it.

ok...bit of a botch, but I got the old rear amp working by inserting something under the circuit board to push it gently from underneath.
Works ok at the moment so must have been a broken track or similar.

Possibly this explains my comments on poor bass, if the circuit could not pass enough current when needed. Bass does seem better already.

Not happy with botch though, so if any Bose upgraders are passing this way, will happily take you rear amp for £25 (skipton?)

I live 5 mins from J30 M62.

CHB, you want the amp, it's still here for you. I'll be camping from Friday lunchtime, but you're welcome to pop over tomorrow evening if you want, or Friday morning.

Cheers,

Mike

Do you have people travelling at the back? If not, I'd say they're completely unnecessary.

Hi Kkallioj

Suppose you're right. Theres only my son who travels in the back , and hes always making his own noise.
There again another set in the back would drowned his noise...........

Skipton (or anyone!) have you still got that Audi rear amp for sale?
The botch job I did last year has started playing up again.
If Skipton or anyone has one then either PM me or mail at

If your amp totally gives up and you are stuck feel free to post it to me. As well as being an IT manager I am (was) also a very good electronics engineer!

No promises, but it it's a broken track (and its not a multi layer PCB) or a dry joint I can usually sort it.

Up to you, but if all else fails let me know :)

Paul,
thanks for the offer. I have bought a second hand one off spike.
If you want, you are more than welcome to have the old one as a "project".
I didn't think it fair to ask you to repair, as even a couple of hours faffing would have cost more of your time than replacing it with a known good unit.
However as a self confessed faffer, if you want the old unit to faff with then it's yours.
