Hi
I need to change my track rods,(A2 TDI 2001) the ball joint at the rack is worn both sides (125k). The Audi workshop manual tells me tha I need to remove the steering rack I havent looked yet but does anybody have any experiance of changing these- apparently its a common fault?.
PS still diagnosing my power loss fault, will report back when sorted.
Cheers

Hi Gazzer
Are you sure its the joints on the steering rack ? I would expect the track rod end ball joints (the bit that connects the rack to the front hubs) to wear first and as you probably know, they can be replaced without removing the rack

Hi Gazzer
I don't think your steering rack problem is very common among our members so you'r probably going to be the first owner to tackle this job.
Let us know how you get on

I've used VWspares and found them fine.
I have released the steering rack box (4 bolts) when changing the Anti Roll Bar. I'll have a look in the manual to see whether this is relavent to your impending worki.

I don't wish to alarm anyone especially megapup0 but I had to have a track rod replace, oherwise known as a steering arm - the cost an eyewatering £480 and that was for just 1 side, it was a result of the usual pothole wheel interface, you know the one where the wheel looses, still pursuing Tameside through the courts now! that and a tyre, total almost £600
