What's the component do that is situated above the O/S wheel arch and directly below the brake fluid res. on a 1.4 TDI?
The reason for my enquiry,[read ignorance], is that when I turn the engine off it sounds like the fan that cools the radiator. It may be 'smoking' too?
Thanks in advance.

I am guessing that you have a 2002 or older A2, in which case, what you refer to is the auxillary heater.
It was replaced on newer examples by an electric heater, but this version (made by Webasto) is basically a mini boiler and it runs on diesel. It has it's own silencer and exhaust, which explains the smoke you are seeing.
It only comes on at below 6 celcius, so you possibly haven't seen it operating until recently.
Cheers,
Mike

Thanks Mike.
I've just had to go to the foot of our stairs. :) Talk about live and learn.
