View Full Version : Accessories you would like to see in A2?

Ade

We had the thread about what we didn't like, how about what we would have wanted? I'll not get into heads up displays or the like, but just pragmatic stuff.

Simple accessories I would like to see in/on the A2 are:

Universal fit carpeted tray under handbrake.
Being able to remove ALL the cloth covering under the OpenSky instead of just being able to retract the front half.
Rear centre armrest perhaps.
The stowage pockets in the door, I wish they weren't fixed in place, it would be good if they were hinged at the bottom so they could open out (so you can dig the bits out of the bottom easier).
Door mirrors which auto flip-in when you pull key out of ignition and auto-flip out when you put key into ignition. (Not sure if you can get this on an A2 in Germany for example, but I've seen it on Merc's in the UK + others).

That's just for starters. Any more for any more?

see the thread under general forum about green consumer guide - the car is not officially imported into uk yet but this could change very soon with the profile being raised here thro press and with Audi bosses in Germany. IF the UK is serious about lowering carbon emissions by 60% then this is an obvious form of transport to promote a la Honda Insight etc

I would also love to have electrically folding mirrors - Peugeot's mirors fold flat when you lock the car... also the new Megane as part of the sunroof package. Driving down narrow country lanes I always fold them in, but to fold the passenger side one I have to undo my belt and basically stop to do it, pain...

I would like more suspension travel - especially over speedbumps...

I would like roller blinds to the sunroof... go and have a look at the ones in the new Megane... there is one for the front and one for the rear and when retracted you don't see anything but SKY!

A bigger fuel tank - mine is the old 34 litre job, but even the new 42 litre one is still not enough. Look at the brilliant interior packaging of the Honda Jazz. They moved the fuel tank to under the FRONT seats, thus making a clever rear seat folding mechanism possible. BUT look under your front seats in the A2: ACRES and ACRES of WASTED air being transported... such a waste IMHO. If that space was a 100 litre fuel tank... image how far you could go... Maybe someone should make an aftermarket tank to fit in this wasted space?

I would like the car to be 3 inches wider to be able to fit proper three people in the back and maybe 5 inches longer overall to give a bigger boot and more rear legroom... (would also mean the windsreen is wider and thus you can have two proper claphand wiper blades...)

Automatic rain sensing wipers: have them on the Golf and they are brilliant - set and forget.

I want rain channels on the A-pillars to stop the water dribbling around...

I want the standard radios to play MP3 burned CDs (12 hours of music on 1 CD times 6 = 72 hours of music!)

I want to be able to fit a roof rack on a car with Open Sky...

I want a boot that can take two fullsize Samsonite hard luggage bags...

and last but not least I want the Open Sky button to be the same as other Audis where it has pre-set positions and you don't have to keep pressing it until the thing is fully open... on all other Audis there is a round twist button with various pre-set positions...

Now we're getting somewhere, some good suggestions there Johann. The 'raintronic' is only usually on the higger end Audis I think, I could have had it on my A4 at the time (1998), but didn't think I'd need it, but after driving a hire car with it on I wish I had.

Ade great idea, and some good ideas already.
I'd like a better looking Service flap, say polished / brushed aluminium or Carbon Fibre or body colour.
Nets on the back of the front seats.
Rear cupholders ( shall be ordering one soon)
Adjustable headrests- fore and aft.
Power socket in the boot - like it shows in the brochure.
Lockable glove box- like it says in the brochure
A bit more room in the above.
Towbar- perhaps to be able to have one retro' fitted, a feature I really miss.
Radio controls to be operated via a column stalk.
Storage bins under the seats (great for hiding phones etc).
Heated front screen.
Adjustable suspension damping to give a more supple ride I WONDER IF ANYBODY HAS FITTED AFTER MARKET ONES?
A more substantial sound deadening cowl over the engine. The one fitted seems a bit cheap.
Halogen - say 20W parking lights
Larger fuel tank.
Regards JohnW. 2002 TDI SE.

Heated front screen and a bigger lockable glovebox would also be nice...

Nets on the back of the front seats.

Mmm, I would like to have this retrofitted if I could, I believe that the nets only came with the upgraded seat material, but I didn't like the pattern and also am not a big fan of leather either. I miss them as I have nowhere to put the Atlas apart from the boot, whereas in the A4 it goes in the nets behind the seat.

I didn't know the glovebox was supposed to be lockable? I wished I had seen that at the time of collection, they'd have had an earful over and above the noise I created about the old style-wiper.

I'd also like a decent front edge to the passenger side dash. There's a gap and then a bar across, but when you put envelopes in this area behind the bar you often find they end up on the floor by the time you get to the post box.

Ade, unless I've got the wrong end of the stick, the brochure claims the glovebox is lockable- page 21 of the 01 catologue "Glove compartment on passenger side, lockable and illuminated, with integrated coin box,pen holder and moulded cup holders ".
I've tried to see if mine locks, but without success.
As to the storage nets, I wonder if a good car upholsterer could retro fit them?

The reason I asked, is that when I had my seats retrimmed in leather they put the nets as you called them on, they look really good although they havn't been used yet :)

A good company should be able to sort something out as its not that difficult

You can fold the passenger seat down!!!!!!!

If you take your left rear seat our completely and then wheel the front passenger seatback down (backwards) as far as it will go, you will have a level floor all the way from the bootlid to your glove box! This is obviously only "level" if you keep the second floor in the boot in place... Just go to my picture page: http://www.audi-a2.co.uk/uk23.htm

Something I'd like (which I found out the new A4 has) is a compass display in the rear view mirror, i.e. it displays a N for north, etc.

I've only heard my alarm twice and it was not the horn going off... I know some cars just use their horns as an alarm but mine had a definite "electronic" noise... not loud though as you said... but not the horn either...

As to the horn I even went to get a quote in having it replaced with a two tone one just after buying the car... but as I pressed it for the mechanic I heard it was actually quite loud when you're outside the car... It is all the sound-deadening stuff in the A2 that makes it sound so puny...

This morning I thought of another very obvious addition to the A2: a rear wiper. The very first Audi 100 Avant in the early eighties had the exact same split rear window as our A2s and that had a wiper. So to the VW Scirocco!!! Why did the Audi engineers not give us one?!

I think it would disrupt the airflow and cause a higher fuel use.
But I've never missed it, the backwindow is always clean, the wind blows everything clean off. It's the part below the wing that gets dirty...

Regarding the absence of a rear wiper, strangely enough it appeals to me ( not having one that is ). In other cars I've had with a wiper it soons scratches the glass, even if water is used because the wiper operates before the water! I've never had trouble seeing out of the rear window, and it would'nt take long to wipe by hand if need be.I think it gives a neater look to the rear end also. And anyway the tailgate is heavy enough!!
Very subjective of course.

...it was not such a big problem as I thought it would be to live without the wiper... but I have always owned cars WITH rear wipers... and after renting the Megane , a Mazda 6, a Micra and a Vectra recently I realised I do miss it... especially the Renault ones that do one quick wipe at the back when you select reverse and the front ones are on...
