Time to blow away the cobwebs!

On the 24th Feb 2008 we are organising another social, this time to the Coventry Transport Museum during the day and Curry Social in the evening.

The idea would be to pitch-up at about midday for the transport museum, with an opportunity to chew the cud afterwards then a trip for the usual curry in the evening.

http://www.transport-museum.com/

More details to follow, such as we may be able to park on the museum site because car clubs are permitted with prior agreement (which I am seeking), and more accurate times.

However, please register your interest in this opportunity to get together - don't forget, everyone is invited to attend the meet and it would be great to see some new faces:

http://www.a2oc.net/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&day=2008-2-24;&e=17&c=1

Keep an eye out for some more events in 2008 such as Duxford Air Museum, Warwick Castle, The Rally Show and the Annual Camping Social!

Hi,

One suggestion - could we arrange a deal with the restaurant for providing a buffet meal? We do this for a local curry club that I'm involved with - our local restaurants charge us £8 per head for a starter/rice/nan/curry. We then charge our attendees a little extra (e.g. £13 a head) to help with fundraising. People simply buy their own drinks.

Happy to continue with standalone orders too though.

Ben.

PS - I've created a calendar entry for people to sign up against.

Once we have a better idea on numbers I'll get in touch with the curryhouse and see what they have to say about the fixed price per head option.

Meet update

We won't be able to park in Millenium Place as the club doesn't have public liability insurance, a prerequisite as Millenium Place is owned by Coventry City Council. However, the Museum have kindly offered us the use of 10 spaces in the staff car park so we should be able to get some photographs of all the cars - if more than 10 cars turn-up I'll need to see if they will extend the offer.

I have suggested we will be there at midday which should give plenty of time for us to congregate, see the museum, have a chin-wag and then schlep on down to the curry house.

Once Ian and I have firmed-up all the details we will post accordingly.

Skipton01
17-01-2008, 10:26 AM
Sounds good - we should make a contibution to the museum though, as it is normally a free thing, but with their kind offer, it would only be right to swell their coffers a little.

Cheers,

Mike

Do you have a particular curry house in mind? Also what time will we be thinking of eating, some might be concerned about the journey home, others about the amount of time the lads will want staring at cars in the musuem!

Richard, we're going to the transport museum, not the air museum this time. I don't think they'd take too kindly to us driving inside and muckying up their carpet!

Hello all,

We now have a table booked for 17:30 at:

Sonar-Goan
153 Daventry Road
Coventry
West Midlands
CV3 5HD

Tel : 024-7650-4670

Map: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=CV3+5HD&ie=UTF8&ll=52.395113,-1.506371&spn=0.011941,0.029182&z=15&iwloc=addr&om=1

We have two choices, either stick with the normal menu and choose what we all wish as normal, and the restaurant will give everyone 2 free popadoms

OR

We can pay £14.95 per head for a buffet style arrangement whereby there is a selection of 3/4 starters, mains, naans and rice etc. With this we will get 2 free bottles of house wine. If we go for this option I will need to confirm this with Sonar Goan about a week from now.

Personally, I'd probably stick with the normal arrangement as you invariably get more choice, but ladies and gents, it's over to you...!

Robin and Maddy will also be in attendance :)

Darren C
13-02-2008, 10:24 PM
Personally, we will be happy to stick with the standard menu - there is a very good selection available and that way it is left open for how you feel on the day.

This said, it is an either/or and we will gladly run with the majority decision.

Darren

P.S. Impressed that you have had the time to arrange this Ian. Judging by your project thread, there clearly can't be enough hours in a day. I have to say, it is looking better by the day though mate. (Empty wallet aside). :p

Skipton01
13-02-2008, 10:28 PM
We'd be up for the standard affair too, but as Darren said, if the majority is that a buffet would be better, we'll go along with that.

Cheers,

Mike

Personally, I'd go for the buffett option - we do this with office-outings and you eat stuff you normally wouldn't. However, it seems concensus is going for the DIY route.

UPDATE:

Right, the appointment is made for arrival at 12:30

You can download a map from here:

http://www.transport-museum.com/how-to-find-us.aspx

Or put CV1 1JD in to your Sat Nav

However, I would like to suggest we congregate together before hand - if you'd like to do so please be outside Coventry Airport on Rowley Road; this is easy to get to from the A45 (and ergo the M6, M42, M1 and M69) and, for those that were there, was our rendez-vous point for the visit to the Midland Air Museum.

Come off the A45 at it's junction with the A46 and follow the signposts to the Midland Air Museum. About one mile along Rowley Road there is a large lay-by on the right hand side by (from memory) a large compound with buses in it; I will be there from 11:30 at the latest and we'll leave for the Transport Museum at 12:00 sharp!

Location is here:

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=436250&y=275250&z=1&sv=436250,275250&st=4&ar=N&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf&ax=436000&ay=274600

PM me if you wish to have my mobile number in case you have problems on the day.

Otherwise, see you there!

Skipton01

Great stuff Chris!

One thing though - Rowley Road is too tempting for me - I'm reading Vulcan 607 at the moment, about the Falklands raid by a single Vulcan bomber, supported by 14 Victor tankers and it'll be very hard not to stick around there all afternoon (I'm sure Angie will put me straight though!!).

And think about Richard - he'll be completely confused!!

Cheers,

Mike

Another excellent event, combined with great company. Nice to see so many new faces at this social too.

Sorry to those that attended the curry afterwards; Di and I did the right thing leaving early - Kayleigh is not very well and was sick slightly just as we arrived home. (Fortunately not projectile, so the A2 interior remains intact ;)).

Yes, a thoroughly enjoyable day and evening out and many thanks to the co-Social Secretaries for their work in organising this.

Good to see old faces again and especially Robin and Maddy, who have disappeared of the scene this last few months.

Seeing a smattering of new faces is always encouraging, as is the growing 'A2OC - the next generation', who seemed to be short of not a lot at the museum in terms of things to do!

Roll on the next social (quite literally when you take that sloping campsite into account!!) and thanks to all who came today.

It's great organising an event when we get such a good turnout and people enjoy themselves. Seeing so many come to their first social is a real pleasure.

The museum was excellent, much more so than I expected, espcially considering it is free (although Marie and I put a little donation in to them).

As always, the Curry went down a treat although my Jeffrey Archer is repeating itself as I type! Somebody I know who lives in Coventry asked me if I knew why they'd be a whole pile of A2's outside the Curry House as he walked past last-night; small world!

We have a location for the April social, which will be completely child-friendly and involve a pic-nic rather than curry. More details to follow... :)

what a great success it was ... Really nice to see some more happy faces
it really is a pleasure meeting like minded people , i know from experience how much organizing these events take and it can be a bit of a worry how many people are going to turn up, i think we have a great team with the Two New Social secretaries and know we are in for some more great socials in the future coming months ...

I Was especially amazed at Coventry Transport museum there was so much to see
and all for free what a great find ....

I Would also like to say a special thanks to Mike once again for campaigning on our behalf and managing to Unite the A20C with the 2007 Autotrader Award which was so rightfully ours Mike brought this with him to the Curry evening so once again we have another cut glass trophy to add to the collection ...
