I recommend trying on-line stores such as blackcircles.com, etyres.co.uk or mytyres.co.uk and then getting them fitted locally. I don't know how skint you are but I recommend buying the best quality tyres you can sensibly afford (the same applies to shoes and mattresses as you spend a third of your time in or on each of them ;))

By chance this months Which? magazine has a tyre test and they recommend: Pirelli Cinturato P4, Continental EcoContact 3, Fulda EcoControl, Bridgestone Turanza ER300, Pirelli P6, Continental PremiumContact2, Dunlop SP Sport and Vredestein Sporttrac 3. They also advise NOT to buy: Avon CR322 Enviro, The Tigar TG621, Trayal T400 and Wanli S1095. HTH!

Unless you really, REALLY want to remain with 185/50s, then I'd advise going for 195/50s. They are more readily available and hence cheaper and they will slightly improve the ride comfort by having very slightly higher sidewalls.

For example, Tyreshopper are doing Pirelli P6000s at £86 for the OE size, but £80 for the larger size.

However, take a look at www.tyretraders.com and there's some decent buys to be had there:

Nexens for £49 each (as fitted to Tank)
Kumhos for £57 each (well respected on these pages)
or Nankangs for £52 each (again, well liked).

Cheers,

Mike

PS, The Wanlis referred to below have been round the Nurburgring on Driveforwards A2!!!

195s fit just fine (I know of one owner with 205s on his SE wheels).

You won't have to change all 4, just keep the axels the same and you should have the larger tyres on the drive wheels.

Mike

Another option would be 195x45x16's which are becoming a very popular size. They have a slightly shallower sidewall which may fractionally improve handling at the expense of ride comfort. Prices for the tyre only start at around £40
Let us know what you buy and how they compare with your previous 185's

Just reading the thread on tyre sizes and i wondered if anyone has successfully fitted anything higher than /50 profile on the 16 inch rims in search of better ride quality?

does going to 195 50 afect your speedo as when i've got my sat nav in the car i'm going about 3 to 5 mph faster than what my sat nav says i'm doing, i'm on 185 50

It is exceptionally unusual for a car speedo to read lower than the actual speed, they normally err on the side of optimism, to protect your license.

Take a look here to see what differences tyre sizes make on speedo readings:

Hi,
When looking for new tyres and wanting to know how it would effect the final speedo reading I found this link very useful.

http://www.alloywheels.com/TyreCalc.asp

You can enter the original tyre size width/profile/rim and then compare with any other possible combination eg. going from 15"-18" wheels.

I am currently running on 205/50 R16 five spoke TT wheels. Testing against a top of the range Garmin sat nav, my speedo reads 1-2mph lower than the sat nav at 70mph. So I feel pritty safe, but do have to remember I have messed with the cars calibration.

Best of luck, MytA2

I currently have Pirelli P6000 (front) and Michelin (rear) on mine, but I think all four will soon need replacing (next 3-4 months). I see 195s will fit on the original SE alloys. I always had the thought I would have to get wider alloys to accomodate for the wider tyre, obviously I was wrong. The kumho tyres look like a decent buy, will look into getting a good price.

Doesn't this mean that the speedo is over reading which would be on the right side of things. i.e Sat Nav (actual-ish) is 3-5mph lower than speedo?

Cheers

I just bought a set of 195/45 R16 Vredestein Sporttrac 3 for £70 a corner fitted through Mobile Tyres Ltd. in Watford. They came to the house to fit them. Only a short drive on them so far, but compared to the 185/50 R16 Pirelli and Dunlops I had on the car, much quieter. Can't tell you about the cornering and so on, but they do look good.
I did see these tyres in the 195/50 R16 avail on ebay for £53 + shipping, so you still have to pay for the fitting and disposal of the old tyres.
