View Full Version : ALLOY WAX
Stuart
As requested a report on Alloy Wax. Took time out today to give my six spoke SE rims a treat, cleaned as usual then removed rims washed the inner surface and then proceeded to clean and poish with A.W. (Alloy Wax) It's a typical polish type cream and as such easy to use (but don't drop the bottle, it may be plastic but it will shatter![:I]), it removed most of the dirt and grime with ease from the rear rims, but more radical action was required for some of the front rims inner areas where the brake dust had stuck tight, a combination of cutting polish and A.W. worked well. The A.W. polished up easily with very little effort, the effect was instantly visible with a clean Hi shine. I followed the recommendation of washing the newly polished rims with warm water, drying and polishing with a soft cloth, they do look great.
I will let you know how the wax performs over the next few weeks, the instructions do say it should last 2 -3 months, time will tell.

Not quite typical, as it is a PTFE based polish as opposed to the more commonly found resin based waxes, but I don't profess to be an industrial chemist so I will leave it at that. I'm not here to sell the stuff, I just bought some and thought others might find it of interest, take it or leave it.

I bought some and have just applied it at the weekend. I will see if it works!

Having spent about two hours on each wheel of my Passat over the last two weekends I applied standard polish (Sample wife obtained from Autosmart - intended for Sweden so cannot read details). Wheels look much better (apart from inside surface which is past cleaning. Next job is outside and inside of the A2 wheels which means taking them off (brake drums to paint at the same time) Intend to use the Autoglym polish I use on the body (Polish plus clear finishing polish (forget the name)) and will report how well it worrks.

Why are NEARLY all the A2s in Lichfield are silver ? ? ?

For someone removing his alloys. The bolts have to be attached with a torque of 125 nm. I think that equals to 10,20 lb /ft.
This goes for the steel rims and for the alloy ones.

Andrew, how are you getting on with your Alloys now, have you seen a difference in the 4 weeks or so you've had the stuff on?

Ade,
You beat me to it! It's 4 weeks on and I will let you know after it's been washed this weekend, but I have to say I'm impressed so far, hit the rims with the pressure washer and the dirt just falls off, a wipe over with a soapy sponge and rinse and the water just beads off again.

That sounds like a good investment to me. One thing I hate is the dirty fingernails for days afterwards (I don't have a pressure washer) :(

So 3 washes and 1,600 miles of motorway later, Alloy Wax does appear to perform better than a conventional polish. I've used Auto Glym on my previous cars rims, and that's only lasted for a couple of weeks.
See the pictures in Stuarts post below. Pictures 1 & 2 are prewash, the runs are a result of last nights rain! Pictures 3 & 4 are after washing, just rinsed and got the camera, as you can see most of the water has run off. I have to say I'm impressed, only time will tell as to how long it lasts, but it certainly makes cleaning the rims less of a bind.
Ade, have you tried latex gloves, you can get boxes of 100 from Euro Carparts at a reasonable cost. They are also good when polishing :)

Pictures looks good.
Re the gloves, might be a good idea... Might cause a few raised eyebrows when they see me strap them on prior to washing my car - they might think I'm going to do some major surgery on it rather than my usual level of 'enhancements'. [:P]

Partly off topic but have just noticed that our rims seem to have a different finish on the inside - as if there is overspray on the inner surface, or just the outside got topcoat. Inner surface is metalic silver but not quite the same as the outside. The demarcation is the line running between the inside corners of the spokes.
Anyone else have this or should I complain?

Mine are just the same. Audi obviously saving a little weight by using less paint!
