Well, it's been a long time coming and I've waited for ages, but it's finally here.

No, I've not ordered one yet, but the Mk2 TT will be delivered to customers in diesel form from mid-summer this year. The engine used is a common rail diesel, similar to that used in the A3. Figures are impressive: 170PS, 140 CO2/km and 53mpg combined!!! The only downside is that the 0-60 time is 7.5 seconds, not much faster than Tank!

The order book opens on March 6th and I've got my name down for a test drive when the demonstrator arrives. The spec is pretty much as per the 2litre petrol, apart from having quattro as standard (which means no DSG at this stage, which may be a show stopper for me, as I could do with this now that my knees are shot!) but, the prices, which I have, but can't disclose yet, are VERY keen, especially for what you're getting.

It will be officially unveiled next week at Geneva, but I for one can't wait for the chance to get behind the wheel.

Cheers,

Mike

Hey Mike,

I read about the TT TDI this week as well, in fact I think one of my mates is seriously considering making a purchase.

I love the idea of the current shape TT with a good mpg return. Let us know how you get on with that test drive as I'd be very interested to hear how a Diesel TT drives. :)

The new A4 has a common-rail 2.0TDI, but the A3 is still running the PD unit. I'd hold-out for the twin-turbo 204PS version that is on its way! As we discussed before, shame there is no six-pot diesel for the TT (nor will there be).

Hopefully the new common-rail unit has better drivability than the 2.0TDI 170PD which is awful at low revs.

I notice there are no quattro S-Tronic's in the A3 range, but doesn't the TT V6 have quattro with S-Tronic as an option; surely the two must be compatable?

I probably will not be an early adopter of the new TT TDi, I actually think I'll be unimpressed, but we'll see.

There is the option of DSG/S-tronic on the A3, but you can only have it with quattro on the 3.2V6, nothing else.

For instance, on the diesels (140 or 170, it matters not) you can have either DSG or quattro, but not both, which leads me to believe that the ECU doesn't have enough channels to operate both (in a similar way to the 1.2 A2, which can't have both auto box and cruise).

We'll see.

Cheers,

Mike

Believe me Carl, if I get 6 numbers tonight, I'll be down to Manchester Audi tomorrow to place an order (even though officially, it;s still a concept). 740lb/ft torque should do nicely and it'll do the 2 of us nicely. Might have trouble fitting the tent in though for camping duties!!

If I stuck an A2 badge on the back, go you think I'd get loads of angry comments from that A2 forum?

If I get one, you can have first dibs on a circuit round Castle Combe Carl.

Cheers,

Mike

"Good news" but as I discussed with Mike at the recent social, given it's a sportscar, I'm with Chris as I just don't think a 170 TDI cuts it in this form..

Couldn't agree more Ian - I bet you'd find that your Arosa (and probably Tank) has a better power to weight ratio than the TT TDi 170, which is why I'm prepared for disappointment when I drive it.

I'm none too sure that the 204PS version will be much better either, but if it is a twin turbo, presumably more could be wrung out of it, more than you'd get from tweaking a single turbo?

Cheers,

Mike

PS, ULP, the only references I can find to the twin turbo unit is on AudiWorld, which says that this is the concensus for the forthcoming engine, and it will appear in future A4, A4 and Q5 models. Now all these cars use a longitudinal layout, whereas the TT is a transverse layout. I really can't see another diesel powerplant appearing in the near future, not one that 'only' gives another 30-odd bhp.

I think what is a certainty is the gradual move to the new 7-speed DSG box, which has smaller dimensions and can handle more torque, the new diesel puts out 350Nm, which is only just a little more than Tank (333 Nm) and possibly a reason for not offering an auto box at launch.

PPS, I've just seen the Autocar article and they are saying about the twin turbo diesel engine. They are wide of the mark I think, and I have documents to prove it (as they say they have). Oh, and mine do have all the figures too! The TT TDi will be here this summer (not 2009 as Autocar suggest) and it will be slower than they suggest too, as 7.5seconds, 0-60. It is also less than the projected figure of £27k
