Ive just come across an exciting proposition on ebay, a flat bottomed steeing wheel off a new shape audi tt. My local dealer cant or wont tell me whether the steering would fit a 2001 a2.
Your feedback would be appreciated, cheers guys

Erstens has referred to my wheel.
Physically, the wheel is a straight swap, however, you will need to modify the airbag harness to make the horn plate work as well. Also, if you want multifunction, you'll need about another £500 worth of parts!

Mike

love the rim, but don't like the large centre hub, wonder if a lambo wheel would fit:D probably would ££££££££ :(

thankyou mike for the input, fingers crossed that the selling price of wheel is within my budget, i quite prepared to pay up to £400 for the wheel. A multi function steering wheel is available on ebay tho. Additional £500 for parts for a multi function, that steep !!:o

400 for the wheel, 500 for parts. 900 pounds to upgrade a steeering wheel, tell me it is definately a lamborghini gallardo part you're fitting ;)

Utter bargain compared to dealer prices: £370 for the wheel, £520 for the airbag!!!
Multifunction parts will be the same price though.

Finally the auction ended and i managed to bag a bargin at 316 all in. I honestly thought the wheel would have attracted stiffer competition. :)
Some might say im disillustioned ? lol, i know it will look the business !!

Thank you Mike, it's very reassuring knowing i can count on your expertise and extensive knowledge. You're a credit to A2OC. There cant been many A2'S on the road with our choice of steering wheel.

You'll have to get a new A2 airbag loom and merge it into the new TT loom.
If you want me to do it, I'll gladly help, as I did with Chucknaldo.
PM for details.

Mike

Hi guys, lovin the mod definatley the finishing touch to the interior. I am also considering this mod, Could anyone give me a list of parts and prices to start this project. My car has the rnse and i was considering the bluetooth module, so the ptt button on the mfsw, if i could get it fitted would be awersome. Would i need extra kit to fit a mfsw?????
should i be looking for a new shape TT or s3 steering wheel or maybe even a lambo mfsw?????????

The obvious starting point is Ebay - budget around £400 for a wheel and airbag (normally from Germany/Hungary).
Any current Audi flat bottomed wheel will fit, so that's TT, S3, R8 - you could even fit an RS4/6, but they don;t have multi-function capability.
The bluetooth module is another £400 fitted from a friend of mine the other side of Manchester (he does ICE stuff around Manchester and I do cruise fitting).
Then, you'll need about another £250 worth of parts to create a multi-function system, capable of talking to everything via the wheel - the A2 standard one won't work, as the A2 doesn't have a LIN bus, unlike all newer Audis (the ones not using MOST bus that is!).
Wiring wise, you'll have to mod the airbag loom and also create a new multifunction loom, tied into the CAN bus and various other points - not easy by any means, although it is possible as I have demonstrated.

Mike

cheers skipton,
Sounds good, Ive allready spotted a couple of tt flat bottom wheels on ebay, As for the bluetooth module im not too concerned about right now as i will retro fit that latter, i will be useing the Ptt button on the mfsw to control the speech dialouge system (SDS) on my rns-e.
So to begin this project i will require a mfsw with airbag (is this a single stage fire as the standard or a dual stage?)
To control the mfsw i also require a new slip ring??? would this be the tt one?
The only thing bothering me is the wiring, mainly the multifunctional wiring loom. can this be bought form a dealer then modded? how difficult i the airbag loom?

As to the slip ring, you can use an A2 one that is fully wired, front to back - you may find that your current one is suitable, mine was.
Simply put a meter across the contacts at the front and back and see how many pins have continuity - you'll need a minimum of 7.
After that, you'll also nee an A4 steering electronics module, to provide the necessary communications to the RNS-E and then a custom wiring job (you can't buy a loom - it has to be made from scratch).

Mike

Am i correct in believing if the slip ring has all the pins not just the air bag pins then i have the correct slip ring. should that be 7 pins on the slip ring that a are connected from the front of the unit to the rear?
could you please give me a part no: for this A4 steering electronics module? (is this the box that look like a relay?)
As for the custom wiring any chance you got a circuit diagram so i know what to connect where?
Thanks skipton, im very excited about getting this mini project started deffinatley a mod worth doing especially for the sds control and then for the bluetooth (later)
P.S. 1 last question the original airbag has one connector and the newer one has 2 so how was this rewired, i would have thought you split the original connector to power both connections on the new airbag. is this correct?

Unfortunately, the pins being there is no guarantee of continuity - you need to put a meter across them all.
The A4 module is 8E0 953 549 R and looks like an uneven horse shoe. As to the wiring, you really need access to a set of wiring schematics and work it out from there - what you'll need to hook up is the LIN bus parts of the A4 steering module, the CAN bus section and then tie these parts into the A2 CAN bus system and steering module.
As to the airbag rewire, it's not that straightforward. If you want me to do it, I will (as I have done for Chucknaldo and PC759), but if you choose to go it alone, PLEASE BE CAREFUL - YOU ARE DEALING WITH A SAFETY CRITICAL PART OF YOUR CAR.

Mike

cheers skipton,
At present i am in the process of gathering the parts ive seen a few steering wheels on ebay and i will probably only find the a4 mfsw controller at the dealers. what is the price of these controllers?any chance you still have these wiring schematics??

8E0 953 549R £94.54+vat
This is what I was quoted by vagparts.com (including my A2 owners club discount).
Haven't bought one (yet) ;-)
