View Full Version : New Tyres
Hi
I think I got the deal of the century this weekend but really need some advice.
My front two pirelli's (185/50R16) were really in need of replacing so I bought a pair of Michelin Primacy's (195/50R16). I have put the new tyres at the back and moved the Back tyres to the front as the tread on them is fine. I know have Michelin Primacy's all round except the front two are 185/50R16. I know some cars have bigger tyres at the back to improve road handling, what the opinion on this
I got the Michelin Primacy's for £30 each from a garage BRAND NEW !! On etyres the exact same tyres are priced at £125 each. The tyres on my car now are of different speed ratings, is this an issue?. The front tyres are 81V and the back tyres are 88V. Will I have a problem at MOT?
Also replaced a faulty temperature sender unit at the weekend, lost some coolant but the gauge works fine now. Thanks to Spike's instructions.
Cheers
Yatz

I think you are o.k if the same size tyres are fitted to the same axle, i.e front 2 are same and rear2 are the same.

Hi Yatz,
Have a look here:
http://www.blackcircles.com/general/sidewall
The 88 part of the tyre description is the load rating, which in the case of 88 is 550 Kg, whereas 81 is 462Kg, so I don't think you have a problem there. V is the speed rating, which is the same at 149mph, so no problem there.

cheers guys for the comments, thats good news that all should be fine. I drove on th emotorway last night down the M6, felt the car handled extremley well. Does anyone else have wider tyres on the back?
Cheers

Oops, sorry Yatin, forgot to say that I too have 195/50 on rear (Toyo) and 185/50 on front (Pirelli). I am waiting for the Pirellis to wear down and will be fitting 195/50 up front when time comes. My car has been through MOT with this arrangement without problems. When the 195/50 tyres were fitted, I asked for them to be put on the front, but the tyre guy said that was a no no. From memory there was a post a few weeks back about fitting tyres of different sizes front and rear, which you may be able to find by searching.

Any comments on comfort? I need two for ours and am torn between 195/50/16 or 195/45/16 to replace the 185/50/16?
Thanks

Hi Jonathan,
It is very difficult for me to judge what a change in tyres makes to comfort, as I have had Koni FSD dampers fitted. These make much more of a difference than a tyre profile change.

If it's comfort you're after, go for the 195/50s - if it's improved grip and handling, go fpr the 45 section tyres, or even 205/40s.
Cheers,
Mike
I've noticed there seems to be a lack of supply for 185/50's around; luckily I now have a couple of spares but wouldn't want to get caught short - Blackcircles, my usual supplier, quite often takes my preferred Pirelli P6000's off of their website at times of poor supply.
Does anyone know if this is a unique tyre to the A2's with 16" wheels? If so I can see the owners of SE's having to change their tyre specs which, I assume, needs to be notified to the insurance company as it's not 'factory'.
Either that or some alternative wheels and...well...the A2 needs 16" 6-spokes; it's the law... :p
