Hello all

I have a 2001 1.4 Tdi which sometimes starts first turn and sometimes takes ages cranking the starter before the engine finaly comes into life.

Having assumed that the problem was with the glow plugs, I ordered a new set from AVS Car parts and have just replaced the old ones with the new ones.

Unfortunately, no joy!! The engine still needed cranking for 15/20 seconds before it finaly started.

It is more problematic if it has been parked overnight in the rain or if it has been particularly cold and I have never had any problem with it starting after it has been first started each day (i.e. after the first time that it has been started, it is fine for say 10 hours)

Any ideas??

Best Regards

Hi GET1962
A couple of members have had similar starting problems which were caused by aftermarket fuel filters - possibly due to poor internal construction resulting in the fuel system needing a long time to prime after standing for long periods.

Cheers Spike

Hello Spike

Thanks for your input, I had the fuel filter replaced (with a genuine one) about 10,000 miles ago, so I dont think that this will be the problem.

Hi get1962.
Have you checked to see if there is any power going to the glow plugs.Problem could be a knacked relay, possible supply/fuse issues that sort of thing Don't know the correct current for the A2 plugs but For 1.8 diesel Fiesta it was about 20 amps per plug ,so anything within that vicinty should be ok.

Hi all
Ive got the same symptoms on my 03 TDI, Spike suggested i got the plugs checked, they are OK. Ive also been to a diesel specialist whos suggested that the injector seals maybe leeking, hmm:confused:
next is the filter check.
Did you solve your problem get1962?
