"Information about the future engine line-up has been revealed, with specific power figures for some of the most important models. The list includes the introduction of the new A1 minicar in December next year, which will be available with a 122hp 1.4L TFSI engine, a 90hp 1.6L TDI, an 86hp 1.2L TFSI, a 143hp 2.0L TDI and a range-topping 170hp 1.4L TFSI with an S tronic dual-clutch transmission."

1.6 90bhp...? Interesting, the move away from PD injection seems to have let a few horses free of the stable!

1.6 90bhp...? Interesting, the move away from PD injection seems to have let a few horses free of the stable!

Not for the first time, 'Motor Authority' has been doing some star gazing through the wrong end of a telescope.

My understanding is there will not be a 2.0TDI A1 (too heavy in the nose), but the new 1.6 will supply the range in various states of tune.

At the entry level there is a 90PS 1.6, but this will be followed by two more engines giving up to 130PS (my guess is 110 and 130PS).

Of interest to me is the dates next to these engines... Telling us exactly which two engines will be launched first if you should want to order one now...

And the only TDI automatic will be the humble 90hp... :-(

most interesting are the 1.4TSIs. The 170bhp version in Golf GT Sport was highly rated, so was the lower power TSI as a replacement of the 1.6FSI. The power and economy were highlights according to a few car testers. Due to high demand and a specific component shortage on the lower power TSI engine, VW actually stopped taking orders a couple of months ago and relaunched the 1.6FSI.

While TDIs have been making all the noises(!), I think the 1.4TSI is a real gem and should give the small TDIs a run for the mp£ given the way diesel is being priced. And being a petrol, it will rev at proper speed too! Depending on weight, a 170bhp A1 should fly! But I'm not having high hopes (see how heavy is the C6 RS6). 2.0TDI almost doesn't make sense given there is a 170bhp TSI which should beat it for performance and almost matching the economy in mp£.

But I'm more and more interested in an A2 1.4TSI. Any takers?

The 170PS 1.4TSI should be amazing, but I've yet to speak to anyone who has driven one who thinks it's anything other than rough, uncouth and incredibly unlinear in power delivery.

The 1.4TSI (122PS) looks like a nice little peach, but VAG have stuffed-up the delivery of parts for this engine to the point where the VW/ SEAT cars this was planned for have temporarily gone back to the 1.6FSI until 2009. I believe all deliveries available will be for the A3 1.4TSI.

So now it needs a 1.6 TDI to get 90PS?

The extra weight - a supersized super mini rather than what we actually need in these times of $135 a barrel oil!

The 1.2 TDI Alloy engine is missing from the equation and would have given better weight/balance than a 1.6.

As for the 1.4 TFSI - twin turbos don't always bless fuel consumption.

So I doubt there will be much catch up in mpg cf the diesels.

With fuel likely to cost £1.50 a litre by Sept 2008 ........

Remember even with diesel in UK costing 8 to 10% more than petrol (£1.25 v £1.15 in Notts) right now it's thermodynamic efficiency is up to 30% better so overall with lower CO2 tax I think the TDIs will still sell more units than the petrol siblings.

Depending upon how much the A1 weighs, the 1.2TFSI might be a nice little peach. However, if it's been taking part in ITV's Pork-a-thon, then perhaps not...

agree, it all depends on how heavy it is.

Audi are not exactly pitching the A1 as a must have for the eco minded so I'm not surprised 1.2TDI is missing.

No, the TSIs won't catch up with TDI in raw mpg. But at 170bhp, current VAG offering is a 2.0TDI which I would think will make a small car too front heavy as a 'sport' model. Even on the Golf GT Sport, a claimed 38.7mpg combined is respectable given the power and 300kg heavier than my 1.4 petrol A2!

Also looks like the TSI remaps are slowly coming out. Intake, high flow cat, remap, I should think the little 1.4 will make 200bhp! The extra efficiency is just bonus.

Autocar are also reporting the engine line up as including the 2.0TDi from a technical memo leaked from Ingolstadt so perhaps there is some truth in the rumour. However even my pro-diesel stance thinks that engine maybe just too heavy:(. An argument in favour of its use will be settled however if the new Ibiza/Polo and Fabia get to use the 2.0 TDi bearing in mind as I understand it they all use a similar platform to the A1. Wonder what the target weight is for the A1? Hope it has a similar boot capacity as the A2 otherwise my dog wont fit:D
