Hi guys, Just a quick one,

The engine management light lit up on my way to work on sunday, took it for a diagnostics yesterday and there were 2 faults showing up, both to do with the oxygen sensor. The guy who did the diagnostic suggested it was the lambda probe in the exhaust or the spark plugs and leads.

I then rung VW who asked which probe it was????
There's one at the front and one at the back.

I've heard that the lambda probe (oxygen sensor) needs changing after a while on all A2's so was just wondering which one is best to change?

Oh and where is the best and of course cheapest place to get the part, my dad can do the fitting so that doesnt matter.

Any help appreciated

Anyone know the best and cheapest place to get a lambda probe? Is it better to replace the front or the back one?

Hi Huw
The fault codes from a diagnostic scan should identify if the front or back sensor is faulty. Its sometimes possible to get the sensors from a Bosch dealer but you would need to provide them with the Bosch part number stamped on the sensor. Either way, they are too expensive to best guess which one to change

Hi spike

the code was 17589, but that's only one of the fault codes that was diagnosed, both were relating to that one the guy said but he didnt write the other one down.

Can you tell from that which one it is? Oh and i've been looking around and prices vary alot on the internet and from stealers. (£50 online and £100 from stealers)

I've looked online though and the specific part for my car (1.4 petrol AUA engine code 2000-2002) only has 4 wires going into it, but the part i can see on my car has 5 wires going into it. Are they selling the wrong part or am I blind?

cheers for the response

Hi Huw

This is the fault code info -
17589
Linear Lambda probe/reference voltage, Open circuit1)
- Check Lambda probe and Lambda regulation before catalytic converter.

Gendan who sell VagCom etc also have a range of 'universal' Lambda sensors on their web site and show models listed for the A2. They seem to be a very switched on company so I'm sure they could advise you if the wires match the original plus any other possible installation issues.

Sorry I have no first hand experience on petrol engine models

I too have a problem with this sensor. I tried to clean it and it worked better for a couple of days but I guess I have to buy a new one as the engine management light started to glow again. But they are EXPENSIVE!!!

Question: Can I buy a used one?
My A2 has about 10.000 swedish miles on the guage. I found a used one from a car with about 2.400 swedish miles. Same year and model as mine. It costs about 1/4 of what a new one costs.

Should I buy it?

Hope you understand my english ;-)

Your english is fine.

It may be false economy to buy a second-hand one. In the UK, there is a 2 year warranty on all new original Audi parts, so this would be worth having.

Guess I have to start saving up for a new one then...

All sorted =) Light has gone and faults have cleared. All it took was the new front lambda probe at £110 from VW...ouch!

Only problem i've noticed in clearing the faults I've lost the remote opening and closing of windows feature =(. Is it easy enough for someone with VAG COM to put that right? Is it also possible to have auto lock of doors at 10mph?

cheers for the help guys =)

Hi, i'm using EasyOBD and the engine fault light hgas the 2 faults, P0130 -Oxygen sensor Circuit malfunction and P0135 - O2 Sensor Heater Cct. malfunction > both are bank 1, sensor 1. I'm assuming this is the front probe, not the rear one? Anybody know? Thanks.....
