Hi and help!!!, I am looking for some early type A2 head lights. Of the type that have the clip on lenses.
I have been informed that Audi first supplied the A2 with this clip-on style/type of lens before they bonded it on.
I am looking for pair to do a slightly trick/stealth/dark head light conversion to go with my dolphin grey paint work.
Alternatively if there is someone out there that could give me a good lead to where I might find some, I would be most greatful.
Regards myta2

I'm currently in the process of doing a headlight darkening project, however I'm using the later type sealed headlights (which will make things interesting). I'll let you know how I get on as you might not need to find a set of the early type headlights (although if you can do it :))

Thanks Kiethb, I will be interested in how you get on. Looks like a tricky job though.

The last set of headlights I 'darkened' had the same kind of clips/glue/sealant holding them together. With those headlights I heated them in a hot bath for an hour and then used a blunt knife to prize the lenses off. I'll try the same method with my spare A2 headlights.
Glueing the lenses back on is easy, last time I trimmed back the old sealant and laid on a good thick seal of black window sealant. Those lights never once leaked or condensated :D.

Hey guys, ever heard of a hot air gun? ... Needless to say be very careful, as you don't want to warp the plastics especially the lens :)
See pic's

I'm pretty certain that the hot bath and the hot air gun won't work on the A2 sealed lights - I've tried the gun and also the oven and the sealant doesn't budge!
By all means try, but be prepared to pretty much destroy the case, as it tends to go softer than the sealant.
Cheers,
Mike

Totally agree, I tried heatgun, oven and finally a dremel. The result of each is destruction of the headlamp.
Locate some units that are just clipped together.. it's the only way.

:)
I've managed to seperate one...but you do have to errrrm 'adjust' the headlight casing a little...
Basically the sealant used is a very strong rubber/plastic glue, and even when its soft it doesn't move or stretch at all. I've gotten the lens off but I had to remove the retaining lip on the casing so I could get a knife between the casing and the lens. I'll cut up/seperate ;) the other headlight, clean them both up and see how the parts fit back together. I think with a nice thick application of sealant they should be fine.
I'll put up some pictures when it all looks a little more presentable! ;) :D
...tis great fun though

Thanks everyone for your comments and I look forward to seeing this conversion completed by me or someone else.
For the time being I'll be keeping my eyes peeled on ebay.

Hi everyone.
I'm still looking for some early type headlights.
I have identified that eurocarparts do a replacement/aftermarket headlight. First impressions indicated they might of been clip on lenses. But alas on closer inspection revealed some glue/sealant to be present also.
No quick fix there then.
Look forward to hearing of any developments.
