I have a 2000 mod 14 with the old service flap in front. I want to keep it and not as many do ; mount the later "Easter Island" profile grille.
It should be possible to take this flap apart and then take out the Rings and spray them in paint . It looks like the lid/flap is glued well together but the rings are loose.

.. the rings are clipped in place, but they're plated in chrome?!
It's damn difficult to try and get that stuff off. You're sure it's flaking?

Yes they are . I can see the white plastic under. But to day I accidently saw how easy it was to take the rings off without damage. Some do want to take the plating off , well I think IŽll respray with chrome paint later. Perhaps also give the service lid a new brilliant Black touch.
tdiman can sell his rings to someone whose rings really are damaged (and has som peanuts:-) )

They are chromed and there is a way to remove the chrome by a galvanic way;) Then you can paint it:)
