Look at my sig pictures! I use the same: iPAQ 3970 with Compaq Navigation sleeve... brilliant, brilliant...
http://www.compaq.co.uk/navigation/index.html
or alternative one: http://www.travroute.com/ (which is the software I got...)
http://www.compaq.co.uk/navigation/images/main_home.jpe
http://www.navman-mobile.com/html/3400.htm (who makes the sleeve for iPAQ)
The best thing about this (for me) is the position on the dash board. High enough te be visible without having to really move your eyes fromt he road... if Nissan's Primera and the Toyota Yaris can have ALL their dials centrally mounted, I can have my sat nav screen there!

No, I haven't bought anything yet....this small problem relating to a lack of money got in the way!
However, I have recently discovered this: http://navcity.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php+manufacturers_id+3+products_id+33 0
Looks fantastic, and is small and portable. I have yet to read a review on it though.
The only problem is that I think you'd need a re-radiating aerial due to the heat reflecting athermic windscreen glass.

How many of you actually look at the screen? Aren't the voice prompts enough so that you don't get distracted form the road?
My requirements are:
Portable (I have 2 cars and I want to be able to swap it between the two in a matter of seconds)
Be able to alter directions if I take a shortcut.
Anything else I ought to be concerned with?

I don't think you would need to look at the screen but if travelling with a passenger, it may be beneficial to have a screen for extra guidance.

The way I see it, you have the following options:
Navman: ICN 630 (£999.00 incl vat)
http://navcity.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php+manufacturers_id+3+products_id+33 0
Garmin Streetpilot III Deluxe (£850 incl vat)

http://www.garmin.com/products/iQue3600/
http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=IQUE3600
OR
Another type of PDA such as the IPAQ, but this could get expensive with all the accessories required - Johann, how much?

I am now very intrigued about that Navman so have fired off an email to the shop asking the following:
1) What is your delivery/availability on this product?
2) How do you update it with the latest road information - is there a CD or software that needs to be purchased and then downloaded from a PC onto it?
3) My car is an Audi A2 and has a heat athermic reflecting windscreen which I suspect blocks GPS signals. What would you recommend to get around this problem that will work with the NAVMAN GPS icn630, and how much is it?
4) Does the standard pack include the car mounting bracket and carry case? If not, please can you tell me prices for both of these?
5) How is the unit mounted on the car - on the dash or windscreen? (I only ask this as the windscreen on the Audi A2 is really far away from the driver!)
I'll let you know the answers as soon as I get them!

Hmm. Stuart, please excuse my question but is every A2 equipped with that "heat athermic reflecting windscreen" ???
I“ve got the automatic ac AND the Becker TrafficPro navigation...
The GPS antenna hides under the dashboard and has excellent connection to the GPS-Sats.
I used this system in my passat before and it worked perfectly there too.
If you haven“t got anything different from my windscreen - it works !

I have to admit the Navman is my favourite system that I have found so far. There's also a small feature on it in Auto Express this week page 71. Ade - I like your new animated gif...you've inspired me to modify mine again!
NikHL - About 12 months ago, I bought a GPS sleeve for my crappy Palm V thinking that it would be solution to getting sat nav in my A2. However it wouldn't pick up any signals and it was then I was advised about the heat athermic reflecting windscreen. What I'll probably end up doing is eventually buying one of the standalone units and if it doesn't work then I'll see if an external antenna solves the problem.

That's a nice screen Dennis. The mounting system, is it easy to transfer between cars?
I don't see me using it much in my own cars, but rather in hire cars I get either via work when I have to travel or when I go on holiday and I get a hire car. Hence, it must be easily portable so it can fit into my luggage and have maps for most of western Europe and USA.

Stuart:
1. With the iPAQ sytem you get a bloody good PDA too boot... mine is linked such that I can surf the web via Bluetooth and GPRS - so I pay only for the megs I use and not the minutes AND the phone can still ring and receive messages... no 0845 numbers to phone (that is not included in Vodafone inclusive minutes anymore!) or people that phone you and disconnect the link... So I can check RAC real time traffic anywhere at any time - to name but one thing useful to surf wirelessly on the web... now can the Sat Nav only system do that? Nope...
2. Price: go to www.dabs.com or similar and search for 3970 iPAQ prices (I'm not sure of the new 3450 can take these sleaves and it is little better than mine really apart from a removable battery). So you should get 3970 (bluetooth) for about £400 or so... 3950 sans Bluetooth... Don't go for 3870 or anything lower as they have old processors and very short battery life... and remember in the car the backlight is on and it saps power... the setup comes with a cigrette lighter power socket... but I find it can do a 2 hour journey on its own power easy...
3. All in the sleeve and CDs are from £250 to about £500... don't go for a system that does not have a flash card included in the price... the card is worth about £80 or so... BUT on my card I have the ENTIRE UK and Ireland - from the smallest singletrack backround I use to work to the more obvious. The cheaper systems wants you to work your route out on a PC beforehand and then download this route only and only 5 miles either way around it... so coming back a different way is a no go as is traveling the UK... Some packages include the entire EU now - BUT read the smallprint as they usually only include major trunk roads etc and probably not the little road to your villa is Spain... mine came sans EU maps unfortunately but I can buy the CD now for £125!!! eish... a bit steep IMHO...
4. The iPAQ reminds you of the wife's birthday, her mums, the anniversary and can play pac-man - can the sat-nav only system do that?
5. As you can see the bracket is a sucker system and moves from car to car very easy... not that you need directions around a racetrack in your 2nd car! :D we each have a 3970 and thus the sat-nav works on both PDAs and in both cars...
6. If your car's radio has a tape deck - mine has tape and front loading 6 disc CD - you can get a standard £5 tape adapter from most shops that you can plug into the iPAQ's audio out jack and put into the car's audio system... the iPAQ's speaker is not really load enough on the motorway. Thus you can play the directions through your car speakers. And when you want it to be silent you just select another funtion than tape which in effect mutes it. Especially useful when you know where you are and only want to see the ETA function or the map... I don't think the sat-nav only system has an audio out capability?
7. You do look at the screen... it shows in green where the planned route is which is very useful as you drive along to see where it is planning to send you. It gives directions but can't tell you which lane to be in... so you need to look at the map sometimes to see where it is heading...
8. The software uses word recognition too... so it does not only speak 10 words like left right etc! It "reads" road names and numbers and has a basic pronounciation for words... so sometimes Leicester sqaure is pronounced as the Americans would, as is anything ending on a ...wich and Streatham - pronounced Stretham is read as StreaaTHHHHam... LOL You can select any one of the people listed in the address book and remember this syncs with Outlook so is as up to date as that... and when you arrive it will say: "You have arrived at Stuart D's house in the country..." if that is what you have saved the person under... was quite freaky the first time it told me where I arrived like this!
9. iPAQ can sync via www.avantgo.com with a massive list of websites everytime you put it in its cradle... thus the Guardian, BBC, lastminute.com, movies close to you, you name it is always to hand...
10. ...the heat reflecting Audi windscreen does not have any effect on the signal - or my DART tag - both of which stated that Audi windscreens can be problematic...
11. ...you get the choice of either being spoken to by a man or a woman...
12. It re-routes very fast... a bit longer the longer your yourney as it has to recalculate everything from beginning to end... but on all my jouneys so far plenty fast enough and dead accurate. You can also click on a button at the top to recalc the route if a jam appears suddenly on the chosen route AND still keep the old route shown... it will also tell you how many miles you've added to you journey if you go the alternative way (since it does not know about the jam and can't calculate this "time" into its own ETA calcs)... the alternative will be marked in blue and you can see it on the map...
13. ...did I mention it reminds you of birthdays? :D
So all in you will pay about £900 for a decent system with a cracking PDA to boot...
Food for thought then...

No, the computer is mounted in the glovecompartment, the remote is under the handbrake. The GPS antenna is under the dashboard, there's a TMC receiver in the underfloor compartment with a special FM antenna on the roof (the only A2 with a gsm/fm antenna on it's roof) and offcourse some wiring to speed signals etc.
It took one full day to install the system by an experienced mechanic. So , no, it's not portable.
The advantage of this system is that it doesn't rely on GPS only (like portable systems) it reads the speed signal, it has a compass and a laser gyroscope. The syste,m can functions several hours without GPS connection.
But, no, not portable. Some of my co-workers (i work for Hp-Compaq) have the Ipaq with the tomtom set and they're really enthousiastic about it. There's also a bluetooth enabled Ipaq that can use a bluetooth phone to connect to the internet/intranet.
Good luck !

Johann - thanks for such a detailed description of the IPAQ. It definitely is worth considering. But the volume of the speaker would worry me - and I don't have a tape player in my car.
By the way, how many MB of memory does your IPAQ have? And how many detailed street level country maps can this memory hold - ie could it hold all ok the UK and France or just one country at a time?
Finally, what's your opinion on how this compares: http://www.garmin.com/products/iQue3600/

Hi,
I have the Garmin StreetPilot III on my dashboard and it works perfectly without any external aerial. (A2 with Open Sky System)
The nice thing about the Garmin is that you can take it with you, if you want to rent a Camper for the summer, on your boat, in the mountains when you want to find that spot where many mushrooms grow etc. It's also a better investment then other machines as it doesn't damage your car, no need for opening the dash, just glue the base on top of the dash (glue comes off without traces, I've tried) and put it in the glove compartment when car is parked.
And it works well, (although I did find several routing errors) and the PC software allows you to set up routes at home etc.

This is all really useful stuff, like Stuart says Concert II has no tape deck in it so this is redundant. I already have a separate PDA (not Compaq), but it is worth considering.
It would appear that the Garmin SP3, the Navman iCN630 and the Compaq PDA all do the job, I need to be able to see a comparative review on all 3 somehow. Some of the benefits of the PDA are no use to me, i.e. already have a PDA and no tape deck.
My main differential would then be how do you use each one. Do you set up everything on the unit in isolation, or do you have to use a PC for example to set up routes, etc. No good if I'm on holiday and I suddenly decide I want to go somewhere different for the day and I have no PC to set a new route.
Any insights?

Johann - thanks for such a detailed description of the IPAQ. It definitely is worth considering. But the volume of the speaker would worry me - and I don't have a tape player in my car.
By the way, how many MB of memory does your IPAQ have? And how many detailed street level country maps can this memory hold - ie could it hold all ok the UK and France or just one country at a time?
Finally, what's your opinion on how this compares: http://www.garmin.com/products/iQue3600/
You don't use any of the iPAQ's internal memory it is ALL stored on the Flash card - 128meg - the entire UK and Ireland. You get this on the CD as well...
So when you do go to the Continent you erase the card and install the entire EU on it and off you go... and as I said you never need a PC again as everything is in the sleeve. (the flash card lives on the side of the sleeve and not inside the iPAQ)
The Garmin system is much the same as this setup. I used to have Palm M505 and the problem I have with Palm OS is that it can only do ONE thing at a time. Pocket PC is windows based and car run several things at once. Not sure if Palm OS 5 as in this Germin system is still the same or not.
Speaker on iPAQ is load enough truth be told, but obviously far better via 220watts of BOSE speaker setup!
I can come over to you if you want and show it to you one night if you wish and go on a motorway so you can hear the iPAQ speaker as you would have it... if you don't want to wait until the social...
Remember that the stand alone systems also have only a little speaker somewhere and may be no louder than the standard iPAQ speaker... Also check how easy it is to mute them, because sometimes all I'm after is seeing the broad map in outline, the arrows and the ETA function whilst I listen to music...

Ade: I NEVER use the PC to set routes up. You do it all in the car before you set off as the entire country is on the flash card. You will only need a PC if you buy a cheaper system sans flash card...

Hi, with the Garmin, You can set up routes etc on your pc before you leave and then download them to your SpIII, or you can set them up directly up on the SpIII.
The standard flash memory card is a small, the 164 mb is expensive, but worth having.
I find it also handy that it remembers the routes you made, including roads unknown in the StreetMap software, so you can use the same routes again if needed whenever you want.

Speaking as someone who can only make and answer simple calls on the mobile phone and would like a GPS (Navman ICN 630 looks tasty). Can any one tell me in words of one syllable how I would use my GPS to go form A to B, via C & D, how does it know? How do I tell it? If I change my mind and wish to visit Aunt Ada at E, what do I do then? If on my return I find the M25 blocked how do I tell it to go via Dartford, or to find any other alternative. If I'm running out of petrol in remote places how does it tell me where the nearest gas station is?
Can I plug it in to the cruise control, and sleep in the back while it takes me to Ingoldstadt, oh no, it's not an auto gear box.
Will it work in tye A2? previous threads tend to suggest it would.

The GPS uses Global Positioning System to locate the car. This is done by all the GPS sattelites in orbit. They can pinpoint a car to within a few metres.
A lot depends on the software you have. Usually, you just enter the destination and a couple of other parameters (motorways, toll roads, fastest/shortest etc) and it will calculate the best route for you. If you were to deviate off this route, it should automatically recalculate the route for you.
The above is based on the system in my Punto. This doesn't have a via facility but it can store the last 10 destinations entered, so in theory you could plan a route from A to B to C to D etc. Also mine doesn't have the traffic alert facility.
The CD I use lists all hotels, airports, bus stations & a few other things within a set distance. Can't remember if it does petrol stations.
Like I said, a lot depends on the software. The new generation DVD based systems have most roads on the disks, while my system (CD based) is OK up to A & B roads but doesn't contain any housing estates

The reason I wanted to go via C&D is because from where I live the M25 is the only way to start. When it's congested (when isn't it congested?) I try for an alternate route, I am sure the GPS will route me via M ways where this is obviously the theoretical best route. So, an address is all I need then for a basic route? To avoid the M25, I offer an intermediate point to my destination and that is taken to be one journey , then from that point to destination is final part. Seems straightforward to me, it should avoid a few harsh words to my passenger(wife) who refuses to pick up the map to verify a turn. Something to do with shouting at her years ago. What me?????? Shome mishtake shurely.

At the social, when you stuck your sat nav to the windscreen it seemed to have a long arm on it. When I stick mine on I can't reach it, I can't even reach the windscreen to stick it on. Did yours have a long arm? Do you know if they are available? I can just about stick it in the front quarter light, but another inch or so would make all the difference.
Johann

The arm is the standard arm that came with the thing. You do have to reach forward to stick it on... and yes it is too far really to reach safely, but I'm still able to do so without taking the seat belt off and whilst driving. You need to tap the screen to say for instance you want to re-route when the chosen route is congested or something...

Here is a demo of how the iPAQ system works:
http://www.compaq.co.uk/navigation/demo.html
From an article about GPS:
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a worldwide radio-navigation system that consists of a constellation of 24 satellites orbiting the Earth.
The GPS receiver uses a triangulation mechanism to calculate its position. In a nutshell, GPS satellites broadcast the information about their positions along with the exact time. Knowing the coordinates of the satellite and using travel time of a radio signal, the GPS receiver measures the distance to a satellite and, as result, calculates its position . However, to correctly measure the distance, the GPS receiver should somehow synchronize its clocks with that of the satellite. To synchronize clocks and to correctly calculate positions, the GPS receiver needs to have signals from at least four satellites. Indeed, if the clocks are synchronized, the position calculated relative to any three satellites out of four should be exactly the same. If this is not the case, the receiver will adjust the clock until the above is true. As a result, your small GPS receiver has a clock accurate as an atomic one!
Obviously, determining the correct position is not as simple as it may sound. Indeed, while traveling thirough the atmosphere, the radio signal from the satellite may be delayed. Buildings or other objects may further reflect the signal. This will change the signal's time of arrival and will affect the accuracy of the GPS. To cope with these and other imperfections, the GPS receiver utilizes very comprehensive mathematical algorithms. That is why different receivers have different performance characteristics, and that is why even the best receivers some times make mistakes!

You can tell the system that you want the quickest route (ie motorways), to avoid all motorways, to do the most scenic, to do A roads only or anything like that if you want. On my system if the current route gets congested, you tap a button on the screen to find a different route, it works this route out, diplays it in blue (vs the normal green) and tells you how much this detour has added to your journey (in miles). It still keeps the other route mapped so you can see where you were supposed to go and where it is sending you now...
You can however just drive where you want obviously. The GPS will try to send you back its way if you have not pressed this button (described above), but after a while it realises you're not going back (or you pass the point where it is shorter/faster not to go back) and it will continue with new directions.
When I switch the system on it asks me where I want to go, certain things are always programmed in like home and work, but there is also favourites, a link to the entire address book in my PDA or specific sights (ie fuel stations, museums, airports, etc). You can also just type a postcode in, though it only accepts the first part, ie RH6 only in RH6 0PJ... so you do need to know the street. But you can imagine the amount of High Streets it will come up with if you don't know the postcode or town for example! Even if you typed in London and then High Street it will be a lot to search through... so postcode first helps.

Hi
I have used a lot of SatNav systems and the best combination for cost and quality is the following:
Compaq iPAQ (3970 or new HP 5450..3870 a bit slow and screen not as nice)
Emtac Bluetooth GPS (Not NavMan jacket. Signal much better)
TomTom Navigator 2
The Bluetooth GPS is amazing, stick it anywhere and it gets a fix within 30 seconds of power on, batteries last for 6 hours or works off same incar charger as iPAQ. All available from expansys.com and tomtom.com.
(only used in UK - but Europe maps available)

Hi Jon.od
No I havn't tried the TomTom Bluetooth GPS unit. I would say the iPAQ does need external power to function fully as a SatNav tool as keeping it awake, locked on with backlight on constantly does drain the internal battery and because of this the GPS receiver may well be cabled aswell. BUT having a Bluetooth connection means that the receiver can be mounted anywhere in the car easily and can easily be carried in a pocket whilst using the TomTomNav software in "walk" mode for route calc. I would recommend the EMTAC (Socket) Bluetooth anyday, its the best GPS receiver I have come across even ignoring the Bluetooth bit.

ps.TomTomNav get better and better all the time V2 is mega and now they are upto update 2.22, they keep making changes as a direct result of user feedback - a really good software company based in Holland I believe.

Cheers Ricardo. I have ordered the non bluetooth version but i find the 'Suppresoor' on the cable keeps dislodging the ipaq from the cable so i am currently trying to return it for the upgraded blue tooth version, Think it will make a neater finish in the car as i don`t really see myself using the nav for periods in excess of 6hrs.
If i do i will probably not be on my own so i can have the passenger looking at the nav whilst it is being charged.
My 10 pence worth.

jon.od, when you can`t return your current one for BT you can try an Brodit holder. (http://www.brodit.com/frameset.htm) I am very happy using this holder.

At long last I have found the answer to the fitting of my Navman iCN 630.All other solutions failed, including Brodit, the trouble with that one was in order to use the full system you need a re-radiating aerial, and the unit got in the way of the passenger and the flight deck controls! The re-rediating aerial simply sticks magnetically to the roof, those of you with A degree in Rocket science will have seen the snag with that, no rockets! To stop boredom setting in I'll tell you my solution. I made up a board with 6mm MDF and shaped it to fit between the front quarter light and the instrument binnacle, and fixed the iCN 630 to that. The underside is non slip material, as is currently the topside, but it's black.
If anyone knows where I can get an offcut of Pearl Nappa leather approx 250mm x 250mm, I would be most grateful as it will match the rest of the trim
