Finances depending, I/(we) would definitely be up for a social of this calibre; a meet with our fellow European colleagues, combined with a factory tour is definitely one of my top wish list to do's.

Which factory?
Heilbronn / Neckarsulm --> A6, A4, R8
Ingolstadt --> A3, A5, Q5 etc
Ingolstadt is a significant trek further for you guys. NSU we did back in May; we had some help from Audi which enabled pics like this:
http://www.23hq.com/23666/3117865_e1e9f5fd53ffaa666444f555f60aa1e4_large.jpg
- that was from the roof of the building on the other side of the road.
The rest of the set: http://www.23hq.com/bretti_kivi/album/3117815
When?
"School holidays" doesn't help at all. Late May Bank Holiday is when? The UK breaks up for the summer silly-late these days IMO, but when? Dates please!
Just NSU is also a bit silly. Do you want to combine something else as well? If so, What?
There's...
- Hockenheimring
- Nürburgring
- various breweries
- the technical museum at Sinsheim / Speyer (I think it's technik-museum.de)
and other options / thoughts for filling a weekend. We did our tour last time on a Friday, because there's generally no problem getting the Friday off if the Thursday is a bank holiday (Ascension etc). I daresay we'd hit close on 80 A2s this time, too.
An alternative would also be the Wolfsburg Autostadt, with the VW-factories; or, better still, the A1 Launch in September 09 at the IAA in Frankfurt ;)

Now the A1 launch may be something to aim for. As for the tour what would be the best tour or what did you do last time?????

A group of us did this in 2004 with a tour of the A2 plant in Neckarsulm and then a visit to the HQ in Ingolstadt. Would be a good trip to do again ~ as Mike suggests to see new A2 in build etc.

PS. Frido did most of the organising and we were based in Nuremburg.

How about a trip back via Berlin with all the UK cars? ;)

Hi
Count me in.
What about including the factory made from glass in Dresden or perhaps extend Erstens idea (AVUS anyone?) and include a (large) detour to see Bret and do the street circuit in helsinki or visit Keimola or is this too ambitious?
Cheers
Jonathan
A factory tour would be a good idea, even though i won't se the A2 being built anymore. In case you guis closer to Germany can sort things out, i might be able to make a thousand km trek and meet up with you.

20-10-2008, 02:45 PM
"a detour" to see me is..... kinda nutz, unless you want to do the Nordkap thing. Even then.... well, the ferry from Rostock to Helsinki is 24 hours :D
Then, if you want to do it properly, you do the trek I did yesterday - this http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=from+lahti+to+karttula&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=51.576045,79.101563&ie=UTF8&ll=62.044713,26.979675&spn=0.963116,2.471924&z=9 - and then carry on up north. It's definitely doable in June / July, but only then, as frost can start again in August.
"the best tour" - the German club is probably doing the Dresden thing in late August. I would personally also quite like that, but the distances for British standards are huge. Berlin would also carry certain weight, but that's even further. I'm open to ideas and thoughts. If Millau is going to happen in June, then maybe if this is later (when do the schools go back?) - end August? - we could set something up? Nothing saying you can't stop on the way over....
@Adrian888 - where in Germany?

This is proving to be popular, will be really good if we can get all together and have 80+ cars. A good 5-7 days maybe some camping and some hotelé

interesting bit: Dresden is around 800km from Hoek van Holland (cheap ferry); Prague takes that up to 1000km one way. *That* would be worth doing, I think. Semperoper, Elbufer, and the remains of the old town itself... this (http://www.a2-freun.de/forum/showthread.php?t=31801) is the discussion thread (it's in German, but there are links to here, there and everywhere) - Zwickau (home of the Trabant) isn't far away either.

brett, my g/f is originally from near Essen, lived in UK 20+ years now.
There are some great ideas developing in this thread, however can I suggest the old 'KIS' motto, otherwise it will be a nightmare to organise. The idea of co-inciding with the A1 launch sounds good too, providing it is not in the depths of winter.....! Individuals could add on their own trips to some of the locations suggested to suit personal budgets, remember also EU travel is quite costly with the state of the pound these days...

<brings the thread back from teh ded>
If there's real interest in this (romo or something similar) for a few days at the end of July, it would be great to know. As it is, I think the idea of the German club's meet just after this in Dresden would be cool, but that might not work.
IAA is 17th-29th Sept. Will be damned expensive for accomodation.
what's the level of interest?

Hiya again all, here's my 2p's for what it's worth.
This Germany trip is really sounding the biz, i'm def in, but my lone dad status means that, for me, it must be during a school break. I feel that we should try to take advantage of good weather, both for pleasure and of course safety. Combining as much Audi visitation, as well as a meet with the local clubs is great, but we must not fall into the trap of trying to cover too much ground, we must achieve a balance. May I suggest that perhaps an informal meet soon (very) may go some way to start laying the foundations of such an adventure. As a guide, my boys are off as follows; 06/04/09 to 18/04/09, 25/05/09 to 29/05/09, 20/07/09 to 31/08/09, with the end-of-school-year break being the most adaptable. Lets hear thoughts from other parents as well and lets get it done guys, lets go, it sounds like great fun! :)

It depends how much you want to cram in, where you want to go.
IF:
- from North to south; Ferry Harwich to Esbjerg, couple of days on the Beach. Legoland.
- the way down means Hamburg - Hannover - Kassel - Frankfurt - Heilbronn. Doable in one long trip or multiple smaller ones.
- Tour would need to be on a weekday (I have to check if they're actually working!)
- back up via the 'ring to Calais means around 1200miles in a week - ten days.
If you don't feel the need to do the 'ring, then you're in a good position for the Alps, Switzerland, Italy (Basel is around 3 hours from Heilbronn). You could also easily dive over to Prague.
that's some of the ideas right now; if I manage to make it, I'll probably be on the beach in Sweden for a few days beforehand, and after the factory trip straight back up as I have to be on a ferry latest 080809.

Yes the EURO to POUND is a big issue right now but things may improve in next few weeks if Germany copies the rest of the spend out of recession promoters like UK and USA.
FERRY: I thoroughly recommend Hull to Rotterdam or for northern folk Newcastle to Rotterdam - over night service is very good value and you feel rested for the big drive.
Another good option is Harwich to Hamburg - again over night with fantastic view of the Elbe on the morning of arrival. Return via Calais or Zebrugge if you want to return via another route.
On my last trip we did Krefeld, Wuppertal (upside down trains!) Schwelm (probably the best beer in Germany!), and went south to Trier (oldest Town in Germany with stack of Roman ruins and fantastic Wine (Mosel region) and big Castles.........

Hy guys,
Just read this thread. It would be nice to meet with the german A2 club and maybe get some others from Belgium, France and Luxembourg for an
INTERNATIONAL meeting.
If I can get a go ahead, I will pass this along to the french audi guys. Quite a few are already reading the A2OC forum. Same with some belgian guys.
Anyway, pending the date, you can count us in (wife and meself).
Cheers,
AMG
