View Full Version : What to replace the Punto with?

NOT another fiat, thats for sure[3]

So far, I've looked at Nissan X-Trail - love the looks but interior seems cramped for the size of car.
Honda CR-V - Good all round package. Very tempting.
Toyota Rav4 - For some reason, this just doesn't do it for me.

Anything else in this category that springs to mind for me to peruse?

As both cars at present are small, I want to upsize to somethig with good interior space and a good boot for all those DIY trips to B&Q.

I'd be tempted by something German but the only thing what really fits the bill there are the estate cars and seeing as I'm only 28 with no kids yet, I want something a bit different. Hence why I've been looking at the 4x4's.

Possibly been spoiled by the A2 and it's interior but none of the Korean cars (Hyundai, Kia etc) appeal to me.

What about a Land Rover Freelander, having owned one their excellent 4x4's, although watch out for early ones as they had teething problems. Hence why I got rid of mine

You're clearly after a 4x4! I've just ordered a new Toyota Carolla T-Spirit (for the wife). They are deceptively spacious and hugely comfortable inside. If you can live without 4x4, they might be worth looking considering.

Plus, I hear that Toyota have an excellent owners club!!

Are you coming to the club social (http://www.audi-a2.co.uk/meet1.htm)?

Yep, I'll second the Toyota. Plus you can get a Verso Corolla which is very spacious and looks like the bigger MPV's-but isn't as big (if you know what I mean).

Welcome to the Corolla fold Stuart!.

I know you don't like Japanese etc... but have a look at the new KIA Sorento... for £19000 you get a mini Merc ML BMW X5! And all tests say it is very well made inside and very handsome outside... and if you buy a XS version the badge on the back looks supiciously like X5!

Personally I'd keep away from the Freelander. I dont think LR have ever ironed out the early teething problems to be honest.
Johann : I know what you mean about the Kia, however so far Kia hasn't done it for me. Had a look around most of their range at the British motorshow in the past. Quality feel just wasn't there.

I think the CRV is a sound choice though Rob. Just as good quality as the Toyota, however a slightly higher interior quality then the Rav4.

Do yourself a favour and go and sit inside a Sorento... believe me, the quality is there, especially in the base model that does not have the wood effect, but even with the wood in the XS it is a real quality item and for the price and metal per £ paid amazing value IMHO. Thus all sold out until late 2004 I believe...

I looked at the Volvo XC90 the other day. It costs an arm and a leg, but it's very impressive. I can't :
a)get it in the garage, it's too high
b)justify buying a 7 seater
c)afford it's running costs
d) persuade my wife that we need one.
Oh, and already owning a top of range Volvo I want nothing less and it's far too expensive with all the toys.
But it is really nice!

Kaine

Richard, I agree with you on the XC90. Fortunately my wife also really likes it, however I sort of lied about the price when she asked. I told her you could pick one up for about 20k - if I told her the real cost, she would have lost interest quickly.

I'm still trying to justify to myself if I can warrant getting a 4x4. My other faves at the mo are the new Honda Accord (only available in 4door & estate though) and the Mazda 6. Might look at these more closely.

Like I said before I want something practical (5door) and stylish.

Mazda 6 is receiving many awards and good reviews at present. The Accord is nice, but I never felt a flutter in my heart when I see one-a bit bland. Thought about the new Avensis-good safe car?.

Saw a couple of the VW Tourag the other day-very nice lookers.

I think that a good dealer is an important part of the choice. I couldn't recommend my Volvo dealer (the biggest in the country) especially when you sport nearly £40 on a new XC 90.

Johann

Watch this space because soon my sig will sport a yellow Mazda6 2,3 Sport!!! We'll probably order it in the next month... It is a brilliant car! It does not feel like a barge, the Vectra did, though it is big. Handles like a true sportscar: firm but forgiving, nice interior, LOADS of space and style... so if you're not going the 4x4 route this is my choice as well...

Had a look at the Mazda 6. Very nice car but it just didn't feel special to be in. The top storage box on the top of the dashboard felt like it was going to break in my hands.

Just round the corner was the Skoda garage. At first Kim refused to come in with me but after a while she did. Looks like Skoda still have a way to go before some people take them seriously.[1]

After sitting in the Octavia vRS, I was most impressed. If it didn't have the badges on it, it could have been an Audi. Lot of car for the money.

Back from hols so was a bit slow in doing all the rounds on here...

Mazda will replace our current Golf 2.3 V5... it will have a DVD sat nav so that horrible top of dash storage box will be a colour screen for that... Car is the SO's and not mine... so I will still be an Audi man!

As to a V5 Passat... you'll LOVE the sound the engine makes. Not sure how strong it will feel in the heavier Passat... but in our Golf you get o-60 in 7,9 seconds! Not bad and that 5 cylinder sounds great too... and if you love the TDI A2... you'll love this and you will have 8 cylinders in total like most 2 car families BUT spread very weirdly!!! The engine noise of the V5 is the one thing that will be missed the most by far when Golf is replaced by a 4 cylinder and very noisy Mazda... the other things that will be missed I guess is the interior quality of the Golf and the automatic wipers that the 6 does not have. And yes the Sport comes with standard BOSE, Xenon lights with washers, standard metallic paint, climatronic, cruise control and all the other normal goodies...

It's the Punto's 3rd birthday next week, so tax, MOT and a service are all due over the next few days.

Luckily I don't have to bother with all that now.

As for the Passat, I moved quickly on it as it's such a specced up car I didn't want to miss out on it. Plus the fact it stands out from the average Passat with its colour and interior. The engine does sound lovely when you give it some. Quite deep and throaty.

As we have a petrol A2, we'll have 9 cylinders between us now.

I see that the current hourly rates for servicing have increased, Volvo main agents £115 per hour. Is that a rip off or what? I am looking for an independant who uses Volvo parts, after all if they are pattern parts it's not a Volvo is it? I must admit to an after market battery, after each service they say "that's not a Volvo battery" in a very accusing tone. "Dead right at your prices". I don't really want to give up the search and revert to the hole in the wall service.

There comes a time when the warranty expires, we are no longer tied to the dealer and reality sets in. I used to do all my own maintenance, I just can't be bothered now. My Volvo dealer (now taken over_) used to reduce prices by about 25% after the warranty was over just to retain your business. He couldn't give a toss now, he doesn't even send reminders. Why should I stay loyal, or even buy from him in future? Or even buy a Volvo again? It all went pear shaped when Fords bought Volvo

Rob
I presume the V5 is the same as in the Toledo-is it 150 or 170BHP (presume 170bhp). I remember Top Gear test driving the V5 Toledo and the engine was given particular praise for smoothness and power delivery.

My local SEAT dealer has a Toledo V5 (2003 52) with sat nav, climate etc etc for £15k. Only £1500 more than my Corolla!. Gits.

There was an article in a german car magazine about a guy who ordered an A-Class A320 from AMG, they basically rebuilt the whole car to accommodate the engine and converted it to rearwheel-drive.... but they did not say what it cost...

I´m sure you could fit a 3.3 TDI into an A2 somehow..:-)

Bye, Frido.

My previous car (before the A2) was a 2001 SEAT Toledo V5 (170BHP).
It was seriously quick - and I mean that, plus the V5 engine made a great note when accelerating hard.

The downside and the very reason I sold it after only 7 months of ownership was that it had what I felt to be a very small fuel tank when you consider how uneconomical the car was. When I bought it, it said the combined mpg was 32. I never saw this figure and most of the time was below 20mpg. So I spent most of those 7 months at the fuel pumps!!

I changed jobs after a few months of owning it and my new job involved a longer commute and I just found it too uneconomical with refuelling needed every few days! Hence my purchase of an A2 TDi!

It does represent very good value for money, especially with the colour sat nav included, so if you can afford the awful economy you'll get if you want to have any kind of fun, then it or the Golf/Passat equivalents may be worth a look.

Yip, the Golf uses fuel at an astonishing rate... the average never drops below 23mpg EVER... Thus A2 is used for trips to the Continent now, diesel is seriously cheaper, MPG is far more, and it is very fast (100mph up and down hill no matter how many people and bags inside) BUT not as fast as the Golf that can do 130mph up and down hill without stress... now that is something that was way too easy and I don't want to meet the Gendarmes doing that speed in France!
