Hi,

I could do with a little help in buying a HD projector. Mike, any one ?

I have found the following which looks quite good but i'm not too up to date on knowledge about projectors.

http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=579P&CategorySelectedId=11110&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11110&InMerch=1

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Optoma-DVD100-Cinema-Projector-Player/dp/B001EP5PUK

I want to use the projector in my bedroom for TV via virgin media or freeview, I have virgin media digital tv but that box is in the living room but could move to bedroom, or use a freeview but will have to try a booster as the signal is not too good on this island or go for a free sat box. I also will be using the projector for my PS3. So it needs to have good picture and not pixelate or have a slow refresh rate.

I only have a small distance between the area I want the projector on a shelf or hanging down from the ceiling, need to look if there is a beam in the loft if can hang the projector from ceiling
.

Distance, from projector screen 3.2Metres (this space you must minus the projector size from, so we could say about 2.9Metres) (I am also going to hang from the ceiling the screen to view the picture on)

Screen size about 1.2Metres upto 1.8Metres max. The length doesn't matter.

Will I be able to get at least 40" viewing screen from that distance, on the above link to dabs website it says from 2.8Metres they got a 60".

So if any one could recommend a screen, a projector and maybe a surround system for my new toys? Not too expensive for everything I don't want to go over about £600.

Thank you

Looked on optoma website and the connections are pretty basic. The only decent connection is the 1 VGA connection which you would presumably use for PS3. That leaves an S Video connection and 1x composite for your freeview. I reckon you would have pretty poor PQ from TV sources.

You may be better buying a second hand older but higher spec projector, just check the lamp hours as bulbs are very expensive.

Check out this site for lots of useful info http://www.avforums.com/

I have been looking at the ones with HDMI connections, HD65 at avforums. Got a problem with screen over radiator though

Is there a reason you want a projector over LCD / Plasma, As 50" plasma's now are widely available from around £500 to £1000, £1000 is Panasonic Full HD with 5 years warranty (Reviews say it's one of the best).

I would think the LCD / Plasma is going to be a better picture and not have any bulb life / Fan noise concerns either.

No where to put a lcd tv in room, and the wall is not strong enough to hold one. :(

what's the problem with a screen above a radiator? are you worried about heat?

just curious

heat is the problem most likely, but if you get a bright enough projector, it can probably warm the room enough by itself!

I suppose you have windows in bedroom, in which case you also want proper blackout curtains. I don't get projectors apart from big size; their picture quality can't match plasmas and pretty bad with any ambient light. In a darken home cinema room, yes, bedroom or living room, not so practical.

also curious, the LCDs are very light and even 42" plasmas (~30kg) can be secured on plaster walls given you screw into the wood frame behind the plaster wall.

Well I finally got around to this idea. Here are the pictures, I went for a Optoma GT-7000 (same as a HD65 just the 7000 is in black). I also got a cheap panoview 84" screen however it is a little too big, but I did not want to send it back because it would cost half the cost I actually paid for it.

We had a number of problems fitting it, being my room was once a bathroom and the walls was not in the best state, so we had to put the drop down screen on the ceiling. The projector I managed to get a nice shelf to put on the wall together with my PS3.

I also have a PlayTV box to watch, pause and record live freeview TV.
