TDi struggling to start and cutting out

Hi, our latest A2 is experiencing a couple of problems. Most of the time it starts pretty much instantly and runs light a dream. There has however been the odd ocassion when its failed to start taking two or three goes turning it over to get going. Last week when I was pulling up to a roundabout on the bypass it just cut out and after coasting to the side, took a lot of encouragement to get going. Its just done the same thing tonight a couple of times travelling the five miles home. Not sure if its related or not, but there is also ocassionally a very dull thudding noise coming from the rear, perhaps fuel pump or something? Certainly don't remember this on my previous A2 TDi.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Jamie

bit of an update - the problem has been getting worse so i booked it into our local audi specialist this week to have full check over. No faults shown, everything working ok and the only thing they could find was that the fuel filter had never been changed. Changed it and it seemed to work for a couple of miles but now the problem is back. Basically, it is struggling to start take 3 or 4 really long turns of the key before it gets going. Sometimes though it will start first time. The, once it is running you can feel it hesitating a little and the when you stop at lights, pause at a roundabout it just dies. It then takes a good number of goes to get started again. Its booked back into the garage for next week and would be great if anyone had any ideas as to what the problem could be?

Thanks, Jamie

Hi Jamie
One club member had similar problems and it turned out to be a faulty temp sensor - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showpost.php?p=93076&postcount=3
A faulty crankshaft speed sensor could also give similar problems but is more likely to cause the car to cut out when warm

Cheers Spike

hi Spike, thanks for posting up the link. The car went back in with a request for them to look at the sensors but all came back well. In the end they traced the problems to some form of rubber compound which was floating about in the fuel tank and clogging the fuel filter. The solution was to change the filter, drain and clean out the tank and clean through the fuel lines. A couple of weeks now and all seems to be well. When the compound came out the tank it was in the form of a kind of rubbery sludge. Garage reckon it could perhaps have been a rubber glove or something which had a one point been used as a temporary fuel cap. Certainly has been a puzzling one as to what its been, but at least the problem seems to have been solved.:)
