central locking problems , click click noise + door key remote not working

Hi all
I would first like to introduce my self as a new owner (two weeks now) of a 2002 1.4 se tdi in dark blue which I bought for my wife to do the school runs and get to work which I paid the sum of £1900 for – the car has 100k on the clock and is far from perfect and needs lot’s of little jobs but seems basically sound – last weekend was spent servicing and simply trying to find where the filters and drain plugs were, as well as fixing a strange fuel leak from the oil cooler which was simply weeping fuel through the metal (porous) , it took a long time to remove as someone had tried t o repair thinking it was the pipes and had glued them on .
This weekend I intend to get to work on fixing the more annoying electrical faults – and if time changing the gearbox oil + trying to find the diesel filter which I did not order as there seem to be two types and I just did not find it (although it is supposed to be near the air filter which I did do) – I will look better this weekend although I will probably take my chances and change it next service! During the week I took it to a auto lock specialist (could not find anyone on this site close to me (Norfolk)) to get a second key cut as I hate the idea of having just one key, I wanted another with 3 buttons for the central locking which he supplied but could not get the remote to work (unsurprisingly when you read my fault list below) – he used vagcom but annoyingly did not let me read the fault codes which were probably 2 pages long and simply cleared them.
Fixing the central locking and getting a working odb2 scanner are going to be my priorities this week – hopefully the weather will not hinder me – I have listed below items that I know I will need advise on – if anyone could help it would be helpful

1: I have micro switch problems –the remotes do not work - the back left door does not open at all – others only when they want to - I get the central locking click click when the key goes in the ignition and you only get the door open display when you open the passenger door (I did not think my car model had a display as I have never seen it) + to get into the car you have to turn the key in the door and pull the handle at the same time and you can only leave with the key in the ignition– so does anyone have a door wiring diagram so that I can electrically test the micro switches – also is it possible to take apart the door locking unit once removed from the car (to actually fix the micros) – has anyone done this?

2: vag com – I have a lead which I have used to diagnose a e39 bmw, can I use this or does it have to be a vagcom special lead – is there any other choices of software that works with a2s – if I was to go with the vagcom free version will it tell me what the doors are doing + what are the reasons for upgrading (i.e. what do you need to do that the light version will not let you)

3: tyres 16r – I was hoping to get a spare first but I think I will have to buy a set of 4 now as they are all running low and winter is upon us, does anyone have any budget recommendations – mainly concentrating on a quite ride

4: one last point – the oil filter -the actual paper oil filter seemed rather loose, I had expected the o ring that goes in first to feel like it was making a seal but it just seemed to drop in there – is this normal as I can not see how it could actually work or stop oil going around?

Fixing the microswitches in the doors - no. Don't even try unless you're essentially a locksmith. Reset the door control boxes by disconnecting the battery for a while (10-15 mins) and then retry. There should be none of these issues. You may also have a borked KSG / CCU, so go talk to Lau about getting a new one. Door locks are not cheap - around €80 each IIRC. Get the scan done and see which ones are really broken.

It needs to be a standard OBD2 lead. Your free vagcom will read the codes but not tell you what they mean.

For winter, get winter tyres. 185/60R15s.

What oil filter o ring? This, if it exists, is a diesel speciality.

seems a normal item just not a tight fit oil1.jpg

ok - got some work done this weekend before the rain set in - took the door apart and removed the lock - then striped out the micro-switch - which was in working condition but the end had worn and so did not actually work in the lock - with a little super glue and a small square of 0.5mm plastic all was fixed and the lock appears to work well - when in place you can test the micro-switch by testing contacts 8+4 (pink/ yellow and brown) where the contact is closed when the doors are open (contact open when doors are closed) (I used 2 pins into the connector to attach my volt meter to - see pic) - anyway now at least the interior light come on but I still can not get the keys remote working

- anyone got vag com in the Norfolk area ! - also managed to fix the door opener with a couple of bolts while I was there - also Bret I don't want to disconnect the battery as I don't have the codes for the radio - which is very annoying as I am sure this might help

Did you try the basic pairing that sometimes works?
Just put the key into the steering lock and turn it on / start the car. With the key still in the ignition lock just press the unlock button, turn it off and remove it and try it.
That often re-pairs keys that have been previously paired.

I did not think that the car had to be started - but just tried it + I have tried the two key / one in the door lock and one in the ignition method - which does not work although before I have had the keys working if I just messed with them( don't know what I did) - but they would only work while I was there, if I came back in 30 mins they would not work?

It doesn't have to be started but it will do it with it started or not.

I don't suppose the batteries could be running low on the keys?

Once they pair it shouldn't matter how long you leave them they should always work!

By the way, disconnecting the battery doesn't always need the code for the radio, some radios have that disabled which I think you can do yourself, but I forget how (anyone?), and I bet you need the code to disable the code !!!
