So I think I may have found an A2 guy wants €1600

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...used,nearlynew,new/fuel-type/diesel?logcode=p

But its 2000 miles off a cambelt change and a full service being needed.

So I have some questions I hope ye can all help with please:

1. Is the price right or is there wiggle room?

2. How much would it cost to get the work done and how long?

3. The Car is in Rochdale so would be looking to get the work done before driving it back to Ireland. Any garages that anyone could recommend would be great.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Mark,

The car looks good in the pictures, but with that mileage it does seem a little more than I would have thought.

As a comparison, I have a 1.4, one year older, but with 124K miles (50K less than this) and it has a working OSS, Double DIN, Leather and just had a cam belt and full service (and a complete top end overhaul) and I have that advertised on here for £100 more than this one and no takers.

So I would try an offer of £1,400 for this one and perhaps agree on £1,500.
The mileage is not shockingly large, but it is a bargaining tool, especially if it needs a Cambelt and service.

Cam belt and serive charges vary, but could be £400 perhaps?

My understanding is that Awesome does not use OE parts.
Could be wrong of course.

They told me they use OEM parts made by the same company who supply Audi.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_equipment_manufacturer

Aftermarket parts sourced from an OEM supplier aren't automatically the same quality and specification as the parts they supply to Audi. For starters, patent and/or copyright rules probably apply for many years (20+ ?) so a cambelt for example may not be of identicle material and construction to the Audi one.
It will be cheaper and it will fit but who knows if it meets the Audi durability test standard or how long it will last. For many people, particularly if you run a banger, they are fine and good value for money but they definitely aint Audi parts.

Cheers Spike

ennio mentions James on Hope Street in Hazel Grove for Audi service. I lived in Hazel Grove for xx years (where xx is a large number) up to 4 years ago when James had recently set up (ex Stockport Audi I believe). I never needed to use him. Previously I had cambelt & water pump changed on the A2 by The General Motor Company Ltd at 30 Cooke Street, Hazel Grove (nearby, Google for their website). They are excellent, have been VW specialists since the early days of the beetle, and are always totally busy with VAG cars.

Regarding the debate about using 'genuine' VAG parts, this is probably what I would prefer. But remember there is no such thing as a genuine Audi cambelt kit. Like other car makers, VAG source parts from around the world. The only genuine Audi part is the box that a kit sold by an Audi parts dept comes in. General Motor Company fitted my A2 with a belt kit made in Germany by INA, who almost certainly will be OEM suppliers to VAG and other car makers foolish enough to go on fitting rubber cambelts rather than using a chain, and a water pump made in Spain. The original water pump fitted at the Audi factory leaked slightly whereas the Spanish replacement is fine.

Spike questions the durability of a cambelt not supplied by motor factors (e.g INA) versus one supplied by Audi dealers. A curious comment given that Audi dealers tell me that their supplied cambelts for A2 have a lifespan of only 4 years (depending also on miles) whereas other car makers still using rubber belts (Ford and I believe Peugeot for example) generally advise replacement after 10 years or 10k miles. Quite a difference. Why? According to Honest John in the Daily Telegraph, the reason for early replacement of VAG belt kits is not the belt itself but the quote 'terrible engineering' by VAG in fitting plastic pulleys on some of their engines that are liable to break up without warning and throw off the belt.
Does anyone in the Forum know if current VAG-supplied cambelt kits for the A2 contain plastic pulleys?
Sorry about the rant but I will never buy another car whose engine has a rubber cambelt.

Correction to my post. It should of course read 'supplied by motor factors' rather than 'not supplied by motor factors' Sorry about that.
