TDi manifold: left hand or right hand, that is the question?

I am fitting a new engine in a project A2 with a Hydo locked engine
the old engine from a 02 plate TDi 1.4 has the small alloy pipe that runs along the front of the engine so that the intake manifold exits on the RIGHT hand side of the engine when you look at it from the front looking into the engine bay.
the new engine has the intake outlet on the LEFT hand side with a very long pipe that seems to go to the top of the intercooler the same.
does anyone know why this is?
and if I need to change the inlet manifold to the later type
and if there are any technical differences in the inlet manifold?
both are AMF engines but with slightly different codes on the cam cover

Can't help but think that your replacement AMF is from not from an Audi A2?
All A2 TDi engines have the air fed from the intercooler via piping to the left side of the engine.

Hope this helps but pics would really be useful.

I have had an engine from a seat Ibiza before and the difference was that there was no engine oil level sensor on the Seat engine and hence the sump was different so as this has an oil sensor then I assume it is from an A2. Also the inlet rubber pipe seems to go to where the intercooler is on the A2 as well as if it was on a polo I think it would be different.
New engine AMF 218 616
Old engine AMF 164 241 as read on the cam belt cover
