Dogbone mount/Torque bar

When pulling off and on acceleration/deceleration I'm getting a rocking feeling through the car. It’s not really bad but is annoying me and I like to have the car maintained to a good standard. From researching previous threads it appears this could be related to the dogbone gearbox mount showing signs of wear, its done 107k miles.

I've got a few questions if anyone can help:

1. Does this item need to be removed in order to change the gearbox oil. I intend to change the gearbox oil at the next service so it would work out well if this is the case.

2. Is changing the mount a DIY job?

3. What is the best place to source this item, is it a dealer only part?

4. Is there an alternative to using an A2 part? I've read in a very old post that the one for the Polo 9N fits with a bit of alteration.

I'll be very grateful if anyone can offer any advice with this.

Thanks Steve

On phone so quick answers

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes, very expensive compared to polo option.
4. Polo mount, swapped bracket, issue resolved with vibration. I was informed the bushes differ but no issues as yet.

To the best of my knowledge, these answers are correct, except the first one. I'm fairly sure the dog bone can remain in situ when changing the gearbox oil.

Cheers,

Thanks so much guys. Vespa when you get chance, could you let me know where you got the mounting from?

Hi Steve

The pendulum support (dog-bone) is sourced from Audi. As Chris correctly states, you can interchange the Polo unit for the Audi part but must swap across the bracket to the sub-frame. The bush in the mount is however different and will probably not last as long as the Audi unit having carried out a visual comparison ourselves. Having said that, there is no evidence that the Polo unit will not give many years of reliable service.

As far as the gearbox oil flush is concerned - the pendulum support must be removed to expose the drain plug. Torque setting on re-fit are 50Nm on the gearbox bolts and 40Nm + 90degrees angular setting on the sub-frame bolt.
Make sure you loosen the filler plug before draining the gearbox oil.

Steve, you're welcome to me a ring if you have any further queries.

Hope that helps.

Ah yes, I stand corrected. When my gearbox was last drained, it was done by removing the end plate rather than by removing the drain plug as cog changes were involved. :)

Sorry to jump in guys but I think I may have a similar problem.

I've been having odd noises from the front and have identified them as coming from this broken part.

Is this the same part as A2 Steve was discussing? And can i replace it with the polo mount? Also I should probably mention I've got a Polo Blue motion gearbox in my A2.

Thanks in advance.

I have a light judder when setting off in first (2004 1.6 FSI) - the clutch doesn't slip at any point I've found, engages at the lower end of pedal travel and generally doesn't feel like it's on the way out. How likely is it that this is down to the pendulum mount?

Is a visual inspection of it enough to identify wear?

Can I jump in on this one too please? The front end on mine seems 'loose', or just not tight and controlled. It went straight through the MOT last week and I kind of hoped they would pick up on a fault if there was one. The front end just seems, as I say 'sloppy'............is there a common fault with them? I've noticed the dogbone being mentioned and thought this is where I would find the answer.....any help??? I know giving symptoms is difficult in text so that is the easiest way to describe it! TIA Clackers

Does your car judder or feel like the engine moves when setting off in 1st?

Part number dogbone (Polo) 6Q0 199 851AK £25.29 + vat

Yes but not excessively, it also feels like the engine is loose when going over large bumps. a loud thumping (I'd have said shockers but they are ok) Thanks for the quick response.

steve id suggest going to your local TPS Trade Parts Specialists direct as thats where the dealers get there parts from as found parts alot cheaper even as just a cash sale :)

Clackers id suggest you pop the bonnet off, (put it somewhere safe) on the top of the engine youl find 2 lifting eyes one either side, grab hold and give the engine a good wiggle and listen and look to see if excessive movement or the engine or gearbox is coming into contact with the body or chassie anywhere as may just need re centering or it will show you which rubber bush has failed ie, engine side or gearbox.

Regards Gary

Just replaced the dog-bone mount with a new Febi Bilstein one (Polo, using the original bracket) - I'd say the juddering has 90% gone. I'll give it a few miles to bed in before trying to identify the very slight remaining shudder on taking up drive.
