unable to communicate with engine control unit

Hi all
I've recently bought a VAG KKL cable 409.1 and it came with VAG-COM

It all loaded up OK under Window 10 64bit (pleasant surprise) but needed to be run in compatibility mode

I connected to My A2 (1.4 petrol 2001MY), I can connect to lots of modules perfectly fine, but trying to connect to the engine module is proving difficult. I get a error message regarding syncing Baud rate see below -

Chassis Type: 8Z - Audi A2
Scan: 01,02,03,08,15,16,17,18,37,45,46,56,57,75,76,77

Component: ESP 20 CAN V015
Coding: 10758

No fault code found.

I've scanned the engine module many times, some times it will pull up random characters in the 'Controller' field, other times it will be blank

Any ideas what is wrong ?

I can connect to the ABS / CCCU / Audio etc without a problem

Best regards,
Paul

Matt,
I finally got around to trying your 9600 baud suggestion, it worked a treat, thanks for the spot on advice :)
Is there any way around the limitations of the shareware VAGCOM other than paying to register the software ?
