1.6 fsi goes limp when in wet

Hi folks! Mant thanks for a fab forum, it saved me many frustrating hours and expensive bills! However, my FSI (my misguided loyalty to Audi for buying an A2 to restore..) keeps going into limp more with several faults which wont come back when cleared, but only when its dry.. Read that it might be faulty ECU.. Really???!! The minute I start it in the wet, it runs, hunts and goes in to limp mode very quickly. BAD engine - 144,000 miles - 2002 Codes that come up are:

but when its dry, it runs like a Swiss watch with NO FAULTS whatsoever.

Have you tried spraying WD40 all over the plug leads and related wiring? A long shot but easy to try?

Hi its well worth checking the earthing point behind the left hand headlamp as that can lead to poor running. Even if it looks tight remove it and give it a clean as often the washer becomes eroded. cheers mike

All done, took all the copper ease off the joint and test drove the car in the very wet tonight. No faults what so ever! Leaving it out overnight and then try it again in the morning... Watch this space..
 
Lot of water and dirt come from that 'radiator gap' behind the grill, I would recommend to close it. Did it on mine.
 
The car ran like a sewing machine in the wet today... Hard to imagine such a simple thing can cure an intermittent problem. All I did was clean off the liberally applied copper ease and hey, fixed it seems. You would of thought copper ease was conductive...... Thanks for all the help!

Yes, but it is too much grease and not enough copper to be conductive, but you would expect the tightening to squash it all into bith sides.
So you are not alone in expecting it to be conductive !

Steve you are absolutely right. Copper grease is a very poor conductor. Electrical contact is always best when dry and clean. The grease should only be applied over the assembled connection to prevent moisture ingress. The same applies to battery terminals. The number of times I have seen people apply vaseline to a battery post before connecting amazes me.
