A2OC Donor
Hey guys . Just a quick one - I both this door strap off ebay advertised to fit the A2 -

It did fit but was the wrong fitment - the bar was too long meaning the door would stay propped open and when it closed it actually hit the inside of the door, beware

I'm sending it back of course - lol.

The bonus on my door strap is that the bushes hadn't worn out but rather the original pop rivits had sheered off. I happen to have a pop rivit gun so made a repair and it's as good as NEW :)

Result

Ps - I tried to find a UK supplier of a NEW A2 Door strap but could find on EBAY ?

Andy,

It probably does fit the A2, but on the rear doors.
The part number in the advert is for the bracket that fixes to the A or B post, the part number for the front check strap is similar (8Z0 837 249), but the rear is 8Z0 839 249. The part number should be somewhere on the assembly itself, I reckon they sent you the rear version.

If I recall, it's just the strap that's a different length, the casting is the same.

Your right steve - the length is different but also the profile on the strap meaning the door opens to wide at the front etc

Thanks for the clarification - I was advertised as being for the front

How easy are theses to change. Need to do the one on my drivers door.

Very easy. Remove the doorcard and then its just a matter of two bolts and tapping out (from above) the metal grommot that joins the check strap to the car body.

FYI I discovered at AITP that the German owners club have developed a handly little repair kit for the door check strap. (They've also created a repair kit for the weak windscreen wiper elbow rivets).

Thats a good buy considering Stoke Audi have increased the price of the check strap by around £10 in the last couple of years.

depending on how badly its broken you can also just do as OP or I did and reattach the two parts with rivets or bolts. this is only viable if your rivets have broken, but it hasnt started to wear the plastic rollers too much yet (i think).

did mine quickly and easily today at the same time as replacing my electric mirror switch. biggest pain of the job is getting the rearmost torx screw back in on the door trim lol.

edit: a little aside, my broken doorstrap had quite damaged my plastic speaker insert, i guess if it was used broken for a long time it could cause some severe damage.

Just found this thread after fixing my driver's side strap. I drilled out the remains of the rivets and used 6mm bolts to replace them. It had been getting noisy for a while (cracking sound when you open the door) and got really bad yesterday. However, nothing was badly worn and it's as good as new now. No damage to the speakers. Cost - almost nil. Time taken - about what it would have taken to take it to the dealer and back to get it fixed. Result.

I also fixed a non-working passenger-door window button. Turned out the connector had dropped. Some gorilla of a mechanic had broken the clip and used insulating tape to hold the connector in place... for a while. Now sorted, with a bit of wire (through the handy holes provided) to keep the clip in the locked position.

I replaced the pop rivets on mine too, a easy fix but you need to strip the Door down and examine the damage or wear first - as sometimes it can be the bushes that are worn - in which case you'll need to replace - but yes everyone with basic DIY mech skills can replace or fix their own doorstrap, no need to pay the premium for the dealer to do it
