Thinking of an A2

I have been a stalker on here for a few weeks doing some research on the A2. Visiting owner forums I think is the best place to really understand the cars you are looking for.

I am looking to change my company car next spring - it's a LEXUS CT200 hybrid, I have really enjoyed it but now that I work mainly from home and we have a few other cars, I can't really justify having another especially as I will be around £400pm better off in my wallet.

I just need something to use mainly for local journeys 2-3 times a week and occasional 200mile round trips to meetings, must fit in at least two of the kids in the back for short journeys, (We have the C-Max) for when all five of us go out plus the dog.

I like cars that are a little different and have been just as happy driving my £1k Smart Car as I have the £30k Lexus and I just can't get the A2 out of my mind. I think it's aged really well and the lack of rusting means should be easy to get an immaculate car despite being over 10yrs old.

I think it would fit in quite well to our 'fleet'...
2011 C-Max (0nly done 15k miles)
2003 TT Quattro (just bought this one owner 50k car)
1998 Smart limited/1
1983 Golf GTI mk1 - owned from nearly new and totally original and unrestored.

I will be no doubt asking lots of questions over the next few months no doubt.

Seriously, have a chat with Rob from WOM Automotive. They're 30mins drive from you over in Lower Tean. They specialise in A2s.

I drive 2hrs to get servicing and repairs done with them. They usually have about 4 or 5 A2s hanging around. Even a 1.2Tdi with average 85mpg .

Whatever I get its got to be immaculate to go with these

Just looked at their web page, thanks. The 1.2 is interesting didn't know that there were any A2's with automatic boxes, guess they will all be LHD?

They were all left hand drive and are likely to be future classics. Rob showed me around his at Adi and its an impressive car !. :)

Love the mk1 golf, lucky chap and wise to keep it so long!

You will not be disappointed with an A2, clearly an enthusiast and will gel to ownership well.

Careful though, it can be addictive! I bought another last week, just in case! (Feeble excuse that its for my daughter if and when she drives, she aint even old enough yet!)

Welcome to the club. Nice collection you have :)

By now you should have received my welcome pack, if you haven't please let me know.

You mentioned in your 1st post that A2s appealed as they don't rust. That's true of the bodies but not the subframes and suspension and some owners have started refurbishing them. However the 1.2s have aluminium subframes and suspension. This and some material changes inside and subtle design changes outside to save weight and reduce drag, plus skinny wheels and slicker tyres, made the 1.2 easily achieve 100mpg in eco mode.

Good luck in your hunt for an A2.

What about this very last of the line 1 owner 55 plate. Looks very clean from the photos.

Yes saw this one, did look nice. probably a bit early to get anything yet until the Spring unless something really exceptional comes along for example something like a sub 50k TDI or 30k Petrol - SE spec 17" wheels, Sky roof, leather, blue or grey... Don't worry I'll get less fussy and more realistic as the time gets closer!

It all depends on your budget and how immaculate you mean!!

You can find them for as little as £4,000 (for something really good) up to £10,000 (for something VERY special) but as I say, it depends on your budget and expectations.

Looks just like my Smart Fourtwo - Limited/1 :)

Can't beleive that, only come accross one other person with a Limited/1. I really like how querky it is with the blue and tan interior, mine is like new inside, I keep telling myself it needs to be sold as I really don't use it anymore, but everytime I think of putting it up for sale I convince myself to keep it. Definately got to go next year though as need space for my eldest daughter to have a car to learn to drive in, which will be a shame.

Just came across a 54 Plate one owner + Demo TDI 90 SE at auction today. 128k full history, few bumper scuffs and wheels needed a refurb but pretty tidy in Cobalt blue I think, grey 5 seat interior, had a hefty looking towbar on back though.

Thought I would have a cheeky bid as it was at the end of the auction but went for £2300 inc fees which I thought was a bit steep. Looked like a dealer seemed to know A2s as had bonnet off in seconds, so I will keep an eye out for it see if it come up somewhere.

That would have been BCA in Measham Rich, it was me that took the bonnet off, I wasn't actually to buy an A2 but spotted it by pure chance, I didn't buy it as it sold to an online bidder but I was the under bidder, I found a recent service sheet and report for outstanding work in the glove compartment and decided I was bidding too much taking into account the potential outstanding mechanical repairs, so backed off as with auction charges and repairs the car would have been the the better part of £3k and without trying the car first thought better of it as you never know what other things are lurking in cars sold at auctions, next time please come and say hi. On another note I was offered a 2004 I think 1.6 Fsi petrol with only 24,000 miles on it the other day, I declined the offer but suggested the gentleman advertise it here, it sounds a nice example in Red but without Aircon or climate which I thought unusual, two owners from new Audi and one private owner with super service history, so if it pops up on here in the next few days it might be a nice example for someone. I've not viewed the car so please make your own judgment and HPI check it just to make sure.

What's the chance of that - someone here on the forum! Shame I didn't say hello, was looking at it as I haven't seen one up close really would have had to have been really cheap if I was too bid as too much of a risk at auction when there are private sales out there for not much more and you get plenty of chance to test them out.

Also looked at the 42k mile 1.0E Lupo as potential first car for my daughter, bit early yet but was such an immaculate example part from re painted corner of bumper , but even that went for over £1k with fees

The car we saw at Auction has turned up on Auto trader at £2450, not much profit there, wonder if found some issues after buying?

Morning Sinfield,

Do you have any further information regarding the 1.6 FSI? I would be very keen to hear more about that car if possible.
