3rd gear crunch

I have a 1.4tdi 2002 115k miles for the first 20 mins it crunches in 3rd until it warms up and the oil gets round any ideas I'm thinking maybe a gearbox oil change could cure it.

That is quite a common problem, it is a worn synchromesh ring and to correct it you need to have the gearbox stripped.

Changing the oil won't harm and there is an outside chance that it MIGHT help it slightly, so worth a try, but I suspect that it will not improve it much.

Thanks Steve it's the fact it goes away after a short period that makes me think oil it's never had it changed, any idea what a refurb costs

The price varies a LOT.

It costs a couple of hundred to remove the gearbox and refit it. Another couple of hours to strip it to get at the Synchro hubs/rings and the cost of the rings.

Labour charges vary a lot and so it is difficult to be precise.

If you can get the box off yourself and get it to a gearbox specialist you will save a lot of money.

The other option is to do the oil change and live with the problem, changing slower than usual.

It could last a couple of years like that!

Hi Steve and Justjust73, how difficult is the gearbox oil change? Is there a 'how to' link anywhere as I'm thinking of changing mine too.
Many Thanks and sorry for jumping in!

I know this is a bit old but how did you get on with this? I have the same third gear crunch.

I haven't changed the oil yet it's not crunching because the weather is warm it only crunches when it's cold and for the first mile or so
