Full scan no relevant fault codes.
And yet from time to time the steering becomes very heavy, (ie no power assisstance)
Faulty PS motor or on the way out ?
Anyinput much appreciated.

It's probably collected water in the connections on the motor like what happened with mine common fault because of where the pump sits. More likely to happen if you have no undertray

Yep reservoir empty.
And yet just serviced by a local VAG specialist.
Who noted "possible power steering pump required due to power steering on and off." Reservoir not been touched in years!
Awesomely average. Snotogram on the way to them.

That sounds like a 'VAG Specialist' to avoid in the future, it is not even that difficult to get to the reservoir cap, remove two screws an headlamp lifts out and the reservoir cap is there.

I had a similar issue last year when the stearing symbol came up on the dash. This was not long after an 'inspection service' done by a local VAG specialist that I do trust.
So I asked them if the Power Stearing reservoir level was checked at the service. They admitted that it was not as it was rarely required.
They could access the cap without removing the headlight and the level was only just below the minimum marker (this I had done before going to the garage) To top it up they removed the n/s headlight, and topped it up, problem solved. (No charge).

Fluid use should be zero so I can understand why checking is rarely done (how often is gearbox oil level checked), so I do not blame the garage.

If the OP says the reservoir was empty then why was there no dash warning light? Where has all the fluid gone?

Yep all understood. However as the VAG checklist states "under bonnet, all fluid levels checked"
Tick and signed for.
In the aviation world signing for a job having not done it is a chargeable offense.
The fact that it is a bit difficult to get to and rarely needs topping up is irrelevant, I pay for all fluids checked, and they are not. Should I be pi**ed off? Particularly as the subsequent road test showed up intermittent power steering, perhaps a new pump then. sir. Incompetence personified.

Am I that old fashioned to expect to get what I paid for?
