RIDICULOUS Car insurance!

I'm on verge of getting my new TDi on the road and finding it somewhat prohibitive. I find it quite upsetting that I am getting ridiculous quotes for reasonable prices on what is quite frankly a cheap old car.

Has anyone got any tips that may be I haven't considered?

Adrian Flux are worst and wanted £1100+ for it and say that this not a classic car either. Won't ever be calling them again.

I feel somewhat deflated as I have spent a lot of time on this car rescuing it from the scrap yard then restoring it, and was really excited to looking forward to finally attending a social in an A2.

I found go compare online gives the best prices sarge , i use them every year for a cheaper price than the renewal , about £400 pound mark this year on my tdi, and try adding a second driver as ive found it always lowers my premium

If it is standard I would recommend asking Direct Line for a quote.
They don't take part in any "comparison" sites but I have found their prices very reasonable.

Hey Sarge,

I feel your pain. It's one of the prices we pay for living in London! I have 15 years no claims and no points and pay near 1k for my 1.4 petrol. Some London postcodes are particularly bad. I suspect in some cases this has something to do with local car crime rates and crash for cash rates.

The second driver trick is worth considering.

That's a disgusting quote Sarge! My wife yesterday on one of the compare sites got a quote on our 1.4 petrol for £230 fully comp no speeding fines etc with Tesco insurance.

My wife and I have full NCB and I have never claimed on my insurance since my Granda Ghia X was stolen back in 1991!. I am of the opinion that Car Insurance is a 'legal scam' forcing law abiding people to pay whatever the insurance companies want. What is the use of the NCB and the protected NCB option (which adds more to a premium)?.

Another thing, why, do the insurance companies need/want to know if a claim has been made, 'even if it isn't your fault'? they don't tell you how this affects your premium. About 1.5 years ago whilst sat in traffic, some youngster slide into the rear of my car, it was only some paint on rear bumper of my car, however it had to go for repairs and he admitted liability his insurance instantly agreed to pay out to get my car repaired, why would my new quote want to know this?

Every year it goes up instead of coming down reasonably, why should people like all of us here who meticulously look after their pride and joy's, drive sensibly, get penalised because others wish to abuse the system.... and they, usually getaway with it.

The system is broken to the benefit of the the insurance companies and the abusers, they win!

Hi always us the comparison sites, my TDI is due in a few way and am looking at around 170 quid for the year, granted full NCB, but protected, myself and wiffy to drive
I guess there are advantages to living 'up north' :)
Cheers,

admiral insurance, I'm paying less than a £1000 for me and the wife on the A2 & micr 08nplate, and my son new driver on them

I have dumped Adrian Flux.Best quote I got was £160 from LV= through a comparison website.
Oddly their own website cost more even with a 10% discount.

Renewal quote for this year from LV was £215. Using 'Confused' the best price I could get was £185 - with LV!!!! That is where I went. This is with full NCB, protected NCB, for myself, wife and daughter on a 10,000 annual mileage.
I annually arrange Insurance on 4 vehicles and always better the renewal quote either with the same or other company.

I feel your pain Sarge, my insurance has rocketed because I have had two none fault accidents in the last 6 months. It's a piss take some of my quotes have been over 3 grand.
Even Adrian Flux quote was around 2500, I paid 1275 for my A2 just under a week ago and the bloody insurance is more than the car.
Compere the Meerkat was one of the cheapest, also Saga cause I am over 50 was quite good but that was a Grand.
Hope you get a cheaper one, but you have to really look, it's just gone silly with insurance. At least Dick Turpin wore a mask

I'm with RIAS, which is for folk of over 50.

£190 fully comp with protected ncd.

Reasonable people in my experience...

As my 'new', old A2, is a 2005 model, it seems to elude the 'classic' car category, which I was hoping it would be in, I have called Saga (yes I'm now 50!) but they gave quote of £900+.

Tried Compare the Meerkat, LV, Confused, moneysupermarket etc....

Got last two to check as recommended Chris Knott and Sky insurance, so will soon find out what the out come will be soon:p

+1 for Direct Line. £185 fully comp, protected NCB, and quite a low excess.

I even switched to them for the Beetle from Flux, with the few mods declared (wheels, brakes and a few cosmetics). They were very interested in why I had upgraded the brakes. They were cheaper than stock at the time, work better and look prettier I told them.

Hi Sarge,

I do recommend that you try Direct Line as I said earlier, we insure our TDI 90 via them and they were actually cheaper than any of the comparison sites (they aren't included on them)

But more importantly when my wife had to claim a few years ago Direct Line did make it totally hassle free. You can only tell if you are getting value for money when you claim.

I am with Direct line currently with my current policy on my DTM, its due for renewal on 20th July. It looks like I'll have to SORN the DTM if I want to get the A2 on the road.

Sarge,i've also had discussions with insurance firms relating to a potential claim whereby even if you've been hit up the backside whilst sitting at the lights minding your own business and following the law it still counts against you! You might ask how can that be so? It's by virtue of the fact that you have informed the isurance which in their eyes makes you a bigger risk for them to insure even though innocent. Aparantly there are people out there that a more unlucky than others. I know.......it's crazy but it's how they evaluate risk. It's exactly as you said...... a scam! Does anybody smell a rat here? Any private industry offering it's services is basically a licence to overcharge people and wash their hands of you when it all goes wrong or at the very least try their hardest. Take the British Airways fiasco a few weeks back where literally hundreds of thousands were stranded all around the world, and no help was offered to any one, even if you were old and infirm. Our private water companies here, in my case "Three Rivers" is 75% owned by the French government. You couldn't make it up,it's that bad and laughable. Rule Britania...........what a load of ...............insert your own expletive.Lol

I recently paid £303 to insure my A2 1.4 TDI with Direct Line fully comprehensive on a multi car policy. Some of the comparison websites were three times the price.

Think DL allowed me 3 years no claims as this is the second year of insuring the A2 with them, also have a Passat 2.0 Bluemotion Estate which costs around £375 fully comp.

My modified people carrier is insured with a specialist firm similar to Adrian Flux because Direct Line do not like modified vehicles AFAIK. Have 15 years no claims on that one which helps keep the costs down.
