OpenSky Repair - Any Updates?

I know there were a number of people looking at repairing the usual OpenSky skipping/juddering/sticking problems - what's the current situation regarding a cost-effective solution?

If you are able to do the work yourself, the most cost effective solution is to just replace the whole roof as one unit. When I have then available I sell them for £175 as a complete unit.

Thanks Steve - that's an option, although there's the chance the replacement goes bad too. I know there was talk of different guides etc. being used - my roof opens and closes, but sometimes needs a hand to do so squarely.

At £175 for a complete and working roof it is worth buying one when available, reconditioning it and fitting it, rather than stripping down yours and having the car off the road for a while and possibly hitting problems with reconditioning your current roof?

Just a thought.

Possibly, but it's a pretty involved solution.

Yes, but there is a lot involved either way, you will have to strip the old OSS down to its bare essentials anyway, hit a problem part way through and you car is off the road for a long while.

Recondition one off the car and then swap it over all checked out before you take your car into the garage to swap it over and it is a bolt off and bolt on job.

But I can see why you are hesitating.

I have decided after 5 months that it's time to fix my opensky. When I click the switch nothing happens. Not even the sound of the motor trying. I've checked fuse 8 and it's fine. Behind the interior light there is a blue plug hanging not plugged into anything. Could this be part of the problem?

the blue plug is the power line for the sunroof motor and plugs into the end of the motor , posibly been unpluged due to a fault so no one can open the roof by mistake

Excellente!!! I will be plugging it back in tonight and open the thing and see what happens. I have a garage so i can always mess about with it if it wont close. It did seem when i opened it manually that the drivers side wasn't pulling quite as much as the passenger side. Hopefully that can be adjusted so the roof closes straight. Thank you for a quick reply Jigsaw!!

I have some direct experience with OpenSky, having replaced an entire unit courtesy of A2Steve having one at the right price at the right time (albeit on the other side of the country, but who doesn't enjoy a weekend in the Brecons!). My old one was doing what yours sounded like it was doing and having removed the whole unit, I tried to free it off. Nothing I could do would make the right hand side start moving. The motor (when plugged in) was just grinding against the cable, which, the more it happened, the more it stripped the gears.

A2 Cars offered to refurbish it for a lot of money, so I ended up buying A2Steve's working unit and fitting it. I then got A2Cars to fit their specially designed pickup bracket (much cheaper than a full refurb) and have cleaned and lubricated the whole thing. The pickup bracket is made of billet aluminium and replaces the riveted pewter Audi effort, which is prone to wear in the rivets: this causes the motor to slip on the cables at the first sign of any friction.

Whilst it is an enormous faff taking the headlining down and swapping the roof out, it only takes an afternoon/evening. You can then clean all the seals and lubricate with the Audi silicone paste/spray and get the A2Cars mod done when time/funds permit.

Sorry for the ramble, but I have ended up with a nicely working OpenSky and have done it in stages to spread the cost.

Hi Simon. Thanks for the reply. Is there any chance you can point me in the right direction of the pickup bracket. It sound like something i could do over a weekend. Im actually a Smart car specialist @ big performance(Remaps, tuning, servicing and repairs etc) so im quite handy with spanners, but i know nothing about my A2 lol. It would just be nice to get the roof working so my wife and kids can enjoy it when they are out in the car. Both sides of the roof run equally when you close it its just when it gets to the front edge and the roofs drops down, the right hand side was more reluctant than the left to drop. I had to push it down manually.

I'm down to get the whole roof replaced by A2 cars, I am not handy with spanners and so this would end up with a big hole in the car.

Once I get the roof done I need to get the paint work sorted on the remaining part of the roof as it has died, also wheels arches are someone decided to rub their car on mine and drove away

As you say it is quite expensive to get the whole roof done at A2 Cars but that is my only real option, having had some other work done at least I will know it has been done to an extremely high standard and I will be very happy.

The other work Tony did sorted out the mess the clown at Kwik Fit did (bent all of the brake lines)

Adam, Simon,

There a lot of detail on the German A2 website (a2-freun.de), check the links provided earlier in this thread.
It's the casting that the motor is fastened to that has been redesigned by A2 Cars.

Thank you I will have a look this afternoon. I have plugged the plug into the motor and all I get is the sound of grinding teeth so I'm guessing the gearbox has gone. The roof opens when I use the manual Allen screw.
