Cleaning inside of headlamp units

Ok so I'm going to ask. Last owner left the back cover half off on the N/s headlamp so I have a collection of dust and dead insect inside the unit.

Any suggestions on or indeed if I can do anything to clean?

Depends on the year, early A2's headlights can be easily split however the later A2's are sealed. You can split the sealed units but it's risky and a real pita!

You have to be very careful with the silvering.

I have had good result with immersing the whole unit in hot water with normal washing up liquid and rinsing it a lot.

Resist the temptation to wipe it with any rough cloth because it scratches immediately.

After cleaning rinse repeatedly with clean water and dry with a hairdryer.

Apparently reflectors can be resilvered, but that will be costly?

Try hoover hose on one bulb opening whilst using the air line in another that may well pull out the debris more effectively.

I managed to pick up split head lamps some time back that I've not yet fitted so that's my back up plan :)

A can of compressed air can wield good results

definitely a good tip about not touching the silvering inside the lamps, Ive made that mistake in the past instant destruction.
