Where Can I Get a Catalytic Convertor ?

A2 1.4 SE Petrol just failed MOT ON :- Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive.

Rob has been our only MOT man for several years. He did try to get it to Pass but could not. First MOT Fail we have had for as long as I can remember. He says it will be because a non Genuine CAT was fitted last year by a local Tyre and Exhaust place. That was £215 on September 2nd last year. Don't know what make it is. Had a big letter K on it. Probably supplied by eurocarparts.

Local VW Dealer says a new Genuine VAG CAT is £860 plus a Surcharge of a further similar amount due to not being able to Exchange the one that is on the A2 now.

Any advice please ?

Thank you,

Steve

It is well worth trying some of the special fuel additives that there are that help reduce emissions.

One of the bottles even states that it is a "Pre-MOT" additive.

I had the same problem but used an additive and took the car for a blast down the motorway at highish revs (an "Italian Tune Up") a couple of times and the tester was surprised at how much difference that made.

Much cheaper than a new catalyst.

Hi - remember there are two cats on a 1.4 petrol - one in the exhaust manifold and one in the main exhaust pipe - very rare I believe for cat to require replacement so I would try and source a secondhand replacement but audi tradition has a new one for sale in Germany at 660 euros plus shipping? Which is suitable for 1.4 petrol but may be incorrect as two types of fuel tank size which may alter exhaust part number

Cheers Dave

Ta. How do I get it accurately Diagnosed please ? Rob the MOT Tester just said It Will Be The Cat.

The original from new 2003 Cat replaced by non Genuine £215 one last year was the one in the Exhaust System not Manifold.

We had to drive through floodwater and the insides of it became detached.

Who are Audi Tradition by the way please ?

Hi there - difficult to diagnose which cat is at fault but if you drove through floodwater I guess it's the one low down in the main exhaust and not in the manifold. Audi tradition can be found if you search on google is a site selling obsolete Audi items in Germany which keeps old Audi,s on the road and sells mostly new old stock items.

Hope this helps - David

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262903672961
I've brought a couple of parts from this guy very honest.
This a runner still starts so exhaust must be all there, it may be helpfull to you and your problem, it's a 1.4 petrol sport I'm going to see him the weekend could take a look for you.

I've obviously got one here lol but the A2 exhaust is all one piece from the downpipe back. I could cut a section out of the exhaust with the cat in place but you would have to join it in to yours.

***I just saw via another thread that Sarge has a complete exhaust for you, please buy from him first***

Sarge. How about Catalytic Convertors for my 2003 1.4 SE Petrol please ? I posted a thread yeasterday about my first MOT Fail in living memory, and that includes the '66 Beetle & '72 Type 3 Variant ! Rob, our only MOT man for years says It Will Be The CAT. But how do I know which one please ? The Original from new one in the Exhaust Pipe was replaced with a non Genuine one 02/09/16. Rob reckoned it would be because that one is non Genuine that it failed on :- Exhaust Emissions Carbon Monoxide Content after 2nd Fast Idle Excessive. It needs to be less than 0.2 Rob could not get it below 0.7

I sent you an email with pictures Pal.

Thank you to all those who have replied so far. Not sure where we are going with this one yet. Tyre & Exhaust place who fitted this one are checking if it could still be under Warranty, and probably want to look at it first. Trouble is MOT Expires on the 18th and I'm back at work on Friday 'til Wednesday. Daughter is using the A2 for work all this week anyway, so when I get it back I'll not be able to do anything until I'm off again.

Update since that post :- They say it was a Clarion ( or something ) they fitted with a 3 Year Warranty but they do not think it will be what has caused the Emissions MOT Fail. They have orderd a replacement CAT anyway. Have to take A2 when I can.

Cheers,

Steve

Taking A2 this morning for replacement Cat under the 3 year Warranty.

Don't expect I'll be able to get it back to MOT Station today for Emissions Re Test. I'll let you know how it goes when I manage to get that done.

Probably still a good idea to buy good used Genuine Cat got the future though ?

OK Latest is Tyre / Brake / Exhaust place who fitted the non Genuine Catalytic Convertor / Exhaust Pipe last year just phoned, asking why I said it was that which had failed ?

My only answer is because Rob the MOT Tester said so. Well how does anyone know ? How does anyone know it is not just some sort of Sensor that has failed ?

They are now changing the other Catalytic Convertor the " Mani Cat " then taking it somewhere to have the Emissions tested. See if they can get the Pass Figures and give it back to me to take for Re Test !

Any advice please ?

Now I'm not saying that any garage would, but I'd be concerned that after looking at the 1st catalyst it mysteriously becomes the problem...

The efficiency of the catalyst is monitored by ECU so I'm surprised it's not throwing a fault code or EML. Another contender for poor emissions can be the EGR valve or the CCV valve, if either stick open they can allow excessive unregulated nasty gasses into the inlet manifold.

However, if the lambda is good (air/fuel mixture) but the CO is high it would point to the catalyst. I'd scan for fault codes just to be sure if you access to VCDS.

Did you try my advice of using the relevant specialist additives that are designed specifically to clean out the system and get the emissions down???

that was a low cost option that might have worked.

No. Not had chance to try anything like that. Not had the A2 here to do anything myself. I said somewhere earlier, Daughter has had the A2 to get from Carnforth to Kendal all week, because her boyfriend started a new job on Monday and had to use her Corsa to get from Carnforth to Barrow In Furness every day for Training. Job comes with a Van but only got his Van today. We had to go and get the A2 back from her work in Kendal to take it for MOT on Tuesday. That and I've had 2 trips to A&E at Kendal this week followed up by 2 trips to ENT at Lancaster. Had to pull a sickie for what should have been my first shift back at work today, imposed by Dr at ENT, so I'm " Up on Blocks " for now. I had to drive A2 10 miles to Tyre / Exhaust place yesterday morning with my nose bleeding profusely, before Mrs picked me up to go to ENT. It's been a very bad, just impossible week. My 86 year old Mother crashed her Merc last Saturday. That's at the Merc Body Shop in Blackpool. She's got no car. . . . . . . . . . . . . Life is not always simple for everyone.

Still, I've got the weekend off on the sick now but I will be bored ***less !

All those trips in the A2 will have helped clear out the system anyway.

I do do hope you don't have to buy a new cat converter.

The MOT was booked for last Tuesday because my shifts Days Off were Sunday to Thursday, and MOT Station was fully booked on the Monday.

Could not have foreseen any of that lot coming, all at once when we did not need it !

As it turns out I've not gone back to work today as I should have, so now I have until the end of next week to Pass the Re Test.

Got A2 back at 17:30 They fitted a new Manifold / Cat, checked Emissions at an MOT Station near them. Print out says it Passes now.

Will take it to my MOT Station on Monday. Don't know if Rob will just accept that print out or will have to test Emissions again there.

Thank you to all who tried to help. May have cracked it now, I hope !

Good News ! It Passed the Emissions Test with the new Manifold / Catalytic Convertor. So that's the entire Exhaust System that has been replaced now, one section at state time as they failed over the years. Should be good for another 110,000 Miles now ?
