2001 1.4 TDI (75) EGR Oily/Leaking Issue

Hi,

What are the options: the EGR is covered in oil, I asked a VW specialist to investigate and they said the EGR was leaking under boost, there's also an oily/dieselly smell wafting from the engine bay and sometimes into the cabin (separate to the webasto exhaust). New EGR's are expensive (& hateful), what are the options for removal/replacement, if I've understood correctly there's a butterfly built into the EGR on our early 75bhp 1.4TDI but I'm not sure of it's function.

Any help appreciated Alex

I had the same so i changed the rocker cover gasket but it persisted so i removed the tandem pump and put new seals in and that sorted it,the egr does get oily and sooted up best thing is to remove the egr pipe all together and put blanking plates on it stops the exhaust gasses being recirculated which is the main cause of the gunk.

I'm not sure if I made it clear, the outside of the egr is covered in oil, the whole body as far as I can tell. I'll investigate the dual pump for leaks / smell of diesel.

My pump wasn't leaking diesel it was leaking oil down the back of the engine onto the exhaust which was burning it sending the fumes in the cabin,if i recall there's a small hole in the egr maybe if it's that full of gunk it's forcing it out of that, take the pipe off to the right of the egr and look inside see how bad it is.

I did put a new oring in my egr as that was leaking too the old one was hard and flat i got one for £7.50 off ebay.

Alex,

Hi ya bud, you get get this sorted? I’ve just bought an A2, got it home and after having the low oil light come on I noticed the EGR is leaking oil badly, the EGR is covered in oil.
