Humming.

Afternoon all,

Got an issue.. there is a humming noise coming from under the bonnet I think it's the Air Con... as I drove to work without it and as soon as I switched it on the humming started spoke to my mechanic the said it cant be the air con. Any suggestions?

TIA

Looks like the top of a Webasto auxiliary heater siticking out of the engine bay on the drivers side. It works like a mini central heating boiler and does make a humming noise when running. In cold weather it switches on automatically but can also be controlled by the Econ and Off switch on the climate control panel

Cheers Spike

Spike is correct - the black cylinder with the silver corrugated pipe coming out of it (just in front of the brake fluid reservoir) is a Webasto auxiliary heater - a mini diesel boiler that humms just like your home boiler.

As today has been a pretty cold one (even in Plymouth), I'd guess at it firing up automatically for the first time today, hence you noticing it. Nothing to worry about and completely normal.

Any specific reason you have a headlight missing?

Thanks for your guys replies, glad it's nothing to worry about will pass that on to the mechanic. Reason for headlight out was to replace a indicator bulb probably made it harder in myself than I had too there isn't much space behind the headlight as far as I seen so just removed it. Thanks again guys

No worries. I see (re. headlight) - the drivers side is do-able with the headlight in place, but only just. The nearside is practically impossible. There's no need to disconnect the wiring loom to the lights though - just swing the light out of place and work on it connected.

I spent almost two years panicking about my whining buzzing noise coming from the engine bay - four garages later (one an Audi specialist apparently) - still no joy. It was only when cold (below 7c) and I had ‘steam’ coming out from under the offside wheel arch!
On the forum for 10 minutes and a member (Mr Broons) told me what it was and sent a picture. my first forum experience saved me the few hundred the specialist wanted to strip down the air con compressor!

Mine was like a kettle going on Saturday morning. When i stopped a gate to open it steam coming out of the wheel arch (same with the main exhaust) it was that cold. Do get an oily smell too at first in car - does that point to a problem ? Or service needed? Seems to heat fine. Cheers tom
