Timing belt and Water pump

Hi All,

Just asking how hard it is to change the Timing belt and water pump on my 2003 1.4 se A2. I seem to be loosing water out the header tank and after having a look around the belt is wet and water/Anti-freeze on that side of the undertray. I have had a quote off a mechanic but he only want to use Gates kit that he will supply but wont fit any Genuine ones that I said I will supply.

Also I noticed when I first got the car oil down no4 spark plug and running has not been great. After reading on the forum it looks like I need to re-seal the rocker down and get new head bolts. Is there anyone that would fit the Genuine parts I will supply and re-seal the cover that could be recommended Cheshire area reasonably priced to do the work but I am willing to travel if not to far.

Any help or offers welcome

Thanks Graham

Hi Graham,

I've never done the timing belt on a petrol A2, but done plenty of diesel cam belts and it's not the trickiest of jobs - only requiring a methodical way of working and a few basic tools. The biggest challenge (on the diesel, and I presume the petrol) is the removal of the engine mount on the driver side to un-loop the belt from it. I've always done this from below using a trolley jack with a timber block between it and the side of the sump (don't jack up under the middle of the sump and the wall there could be deformed or split if you're unlucky).

I can thoroughly recommend Awesome GTi in Irlam - they only use genuine parts and I'd imagine would use your supplied parts too.

The water leak issue is exactly the same as I had earlier in the year and will be caused by the weep hole in the pump leaking - which it's designed to do if anything fails - it's a pressure bypass really, like a safety valve on a pressure cooker. Factor in 2 litres of G12++ coolant and whilst you're at it, this is a good time to change the thermostat and perhaps even the temperature sender if you've ever had issues in this area.

Something id like to do also but on the 1.4 tdi

Biggest job I have done so far was a clutch on a Yaris which I found quite easy , changing timing belts has always scared me to be honest but it would be a good skill to have as a money saver.

Graham, not sure which part of Cheshire you are in.

My cars go to Audi Doctor in Hazel Grove: if that is convenient have a chat with James. I have used this garage since 2009 and can thoroughly recommend.

WOM Automotive in Stoke have an excellent reputation on this forum.

What is the replacement intervals for ATL engine?

It started out at 60k miles or 5 years, then went to 80K miles or 5 years. The time interval is to guard against the rubber element of the belt perishing, however, I did my second change on my A2 earlier this year after an interval of 7 years and it was pretty much perfect still.

timing belt. tensions and water pump change out side of London about £350, inside London £400 to £450
The Gates belt and tensions I believe is OEM as my TDI had its belt changed via Audi main dealer and when I came to change it the tensioners where Gates branded, not sure on the belt as all the markings had long ago worn off, but would expect Gates as well

Cheers

I would think the Shetland price will surpass even the London one , heard of a garage here recently charging 55 pound an hour, captive market ;)

90,000km? That's only just over 55k miles - very short intervals indeed. The price is also stupendously expensive. Almost cheaper to get a ferry to the UK and have the work done here I bet.

I am in the same position as you, cambelt, tensioners, water pump change and reseal cam cover. I have bought the parts (apart from G12 for a complete coolant change and new bolts &sealant for cam cover).

Because my wife uses the car for work I have to find a weekend to do it when we are both off and the weather isn't too bad as I will be doing it on my drive.

I need to get the cam locking tool(s) if anyone has a part number for them (or are there generic ones available?).

Last weekend I did oil, oil filter, spark plugs, air filter, cabin filter. I was going to do my fuel filter but couldn't find my hose clamps so will have to buy another set before doing that.

Hi all I am after some HELP !after the WIFE breaking down today on the busiest duel carrigeway in rush hour traffic my little 1.4 decided to throw the engine management light on and started running rough shortly followed by all the lights and beeping alarms. After leaving it for 20 mins off and the rush hour gone I managed to get it home funnily enough drove ok just hunting on tick over. I have just plugged into my vcds and has thrown up these error codes can anyone throw some light on any of the codes before I clear them. Thanks
