Dodgy indicators

Hello,

My indicators are acting up. When I push the stalk down they tick for a bit then nothing. I took the car to a local Audi specialist in Hove, but they couldn't get the car to show an indicator fault, so didn't want to replace anything in case it cost me money but didn't work. A bit frustrating. I took it in to get fixed. It's not the most fun I've had driving around with no indicators.

In fact, when I picked the car up, the indicators did work briefly again. But the garage said they hadn't managed to fix them so I assume they had a fiddle and maybe temporarily fixed a dodgy connection? I don't know - that's obviously a guess.

They've gone to now not really working at all or flashing once every time I push the stalk down. The hazards work. Does anyone have any recommendations based on these symptoms? Is there anything I can take a chance on replacing? Or should I just get someone else to have another go checking the connections?

Thanks in advance,
Hayes

Relay or stalk. Relay is about £40 new or £20 used, and is easier to replace than the stalk. There are two separate circuits in the relay, so the hazards working is not necessarily indication of a faulty stalk.

The relay is in a little cradle behind the cubby hole.

Open the ash tray, put your hands in the cubby hole and make a fist and then pull, and the cubby should come out. The relay is at the back. It's tricky to disconnect but it is doable, with some swearing.

One final edit... Here's another link.

My money is on the relay. The added current flowing when all corners are flashing, as in when the hazards are on, means that the switches will operate. You could remove the old relay, open it up and use a fine wet/dry paper folded over to clean up the contacts - I've done this on a few occasions and it brings things back to life.

Sorry not of help to you, but is it still legal to use hand signals instead of indicators?????? I bet most drivers would not have a clue how to indicate turning left or straight-on manually!!!!!

I'll send you one for free if you can wait until I get home at the weekend. You'll have to cover postage at £3.29 though.

Edit- that will teach me to actually read things before responding. The 602 relay has nothing to do with the indicators. I can supply a indicator relay for £7.50 though.

Oops, my bad - it was late at night ;)

Sounds like the relay to me as well as there is power going to them if you push the stalk (even if it only flashes once). Try the relay first, i had a similar issue with the wipers and needed an instant fix as it was due out on the road the following day so I bought a new wiper motor at about £100 (i did strip the wiper motor and it was damaged on the inside). Fitted the new motor and still the same issue, it did turn out to be the relay which i was waiting to arrive.

Try the cheaper option first.

If you hold your finger down (or up) on the start, do they flash or just stay on? if they flash then I suppose you could drive like that until you get another relay.

That'll be the 602 relay ;)

Yep, 602 relay. On the bonus side, I do have a new motor if the fitted one fails. I wasn't going to strip it all down again to fit the new motor as the old one was still working and the one bolt is a real pain, even with trying to move the brake reservoir as much as I could! At least I know how to do it if the motor ever does fail.

After a bit of Googling but seems to be a bit of a gray area. I've used my right arm when it was useful to others. Haven't felt so confident of doing the bent right arm for left! Have used hazards a couple of times when people were close behind and I needed to turn. Bizarrely I can sort of indicate if I repeatedly push the stalk (one flash per push). Also strange is the fact that after an hour or so of driving, they seem to work.

Yes please - thank you

Belated update! I bought a stalk on ebay (£37) a month later, the garage fitted it and it all worked. Thanks all for your advice.
