Faults with automatic air condition (Klimavollautomat)

(I'm a new member here, so it might be possible that there is an existing topic regarding these faults, but at least I didn't find any.)

My mom quite recently bought a 2004 model A2 1.6 FSI S-line (I'm driving an A4 B6 TQ ;)), and she was wondering why does the temperature of the air that the air condition blows changes all the time. I picked up the car, and yes: The temp changes all the time (cold-hot-cold-hot etc.) with cycles of few seconds. However, the inside air temperature feels close to the temperature set. It really seems that some of the flaps doesn't know its position (a common fault with Audi's with auto air cond.).

Well, as a VAG-COM owner I did the autoscan, removed all the old fault codes, drove a few kilometers, tried all the functions of the auto air cond. panel, and then read the codes again. The fault codes are the following:

---
Control Module Part Number: 8Z0 820 043 G
Component and/or Version: A2-KLIMAVOLLAUTOMAT 0514
Software Coding:
Work Shop Code:
3 Faults Found:
00710 - Defroster Flap Positioning Motor (V107)
41-10 - Blocked or No Voltage - Intermittent
01271 - Positioning Motor for Temperature Flap (V68)
41-10 - Blocked or No Voltage - Intermittent
00601 - Potentiometer On Positioning Motor for Central Flap (G112)
30-10 - Open or Short to Plus - Intermittent
---

What is interesting, three flaps seems to be failing. Yes, intermittent, but all the codes tend to appear only a few minutes after clearing the fault codes.. Might it be a problem with the KLIMAVOLLAUTOMAT-module instead of the flaps? And, if the problem is with the flaps' positioning, do you guys have any good recommendations how to overcome the problems? Should I try to do the adaptation with VAG-COM?

I would really appreciate any ideas to overcome these annoying but not so acute problems :)

I had some faults come up on a scan on my car Mike (skipton01) did the scan, it seems to have a problem when you leave it on AUTO the flaps seem to stick in position. but as i don't no the fault codes some of the techs on here will no daught tell you the problems.
Mine still pulses from time to time but i keep running through the vent positions two or three times a week

Cheers Phil

Thank you for your answers and welcoming me!

I spent some time trying to find tips e.g. from a common Finnish Audi related forum. It really seems that similar problems tend to appear especially with older Audis (e.g. A4 B5, 100/200) at some point.

However, in those cases, the flaps really become blocked - i.e. no hot air at all, no air for the footwell and so forth. Now the symptoms are luckily less acute, as all the functions of the auto AC more or less work.

The ultimate solution naturally is to disassemble and either replace the failing motors and potentiometers, or to fix them. As spike stated, they are not very accessible. Hence - doesn't sound something I'd like to spend my day with.

If it is somehow possible to "refresh" the failing parts by e.g. VAG-COM, I'll do that. Otherwise it might be the most feasible to wait till the next scheduled service and ask them to fix the air con.

I'm not aware of any VagCom procedures which will help but Erstens - who keeps us informed of 'snippets' from the German A2 forum wrote this back in March........

''Souns like one or the air flaps are not working correctly. This problem happens and is verry expencive but there is a way to repair it without pulling out the full dashboward. But not easy.''

This suggests there is a procedure which may help unstick the flaps - which can probably seize up in the partly open position.
Maybe you could send him a private mail and ask him for more info.

Cheers Spike

Thanks for the advice, Spike! I'll contact "Erstens" if the flaps keep seizing up.

This morning I did the adaption for the flaps. For those who are "struggling" with similar problems, it's done this way (found the solution at Audifinns-forum, probably the same for all Audi's):
1) Connect the VAG-COM, go to the control modules, and auto hvac-module.
2) Advanced functions, basic settings.
3) Group number 1. (Press "up" once)
4) As the numbers change, the position of the flaps change.
4) Wait till all those are 0.0.

I did that a few times, and at least all the flaps in question were moving. No fault codes appeared immediately. I'll read the codes again some day and see if they are still failing.

terve!

There's a document over on the German forum about how to remove the flaps without taking the dashboard apart (kun sä tarvii suomeksi, älä kysy mua ;)) - I could put that into English if you need.

Moi!

That would be very kind! (I took only few courses of German at university and well... I'm least confused when ordering a one liter beer or a bratwurst :))

V68 hvac flap motor replacement without dash removal

Bret,

Is the English translation for this available?

Thanks

Bret's not been around the forum ( or at least logged in) for a couple of months.......... I'm sure he'll return soon :)

Just to let you all know, Vince at Stealth can do the V68 replacement without removal of the dash. I have just had this done by Vince and it took him 3 hours to complete. Only removal of the glovebox was required within the cabin and the rest of the work was carried out with the undertray removed. It was not that straightforward as access was difficult and lining up the motors gear teeth required patience and skill.

For those further north (although ironically just down the road from fhl) Audi Doctor in Hazel Grove, Stockport fixed my issue
01271 Positioning motor for temperature flap (V68) 41-10 Blocked or No Voltage - Intermittent.
by replacing the V68 temperature flap control motor today. I was charged for parts plus two hours labour.

They also fitted an aircon compressor which I bought from chumsofmanutd (Rob) and so I now have a working climate control for the first time in a little while:D

I have been using Audi Doctor for all of my servicing since I bought my A2 in Oct-2009. James and Etiene are both ex-Audi technical specialists with incredible knowledge and passion, and both are thoroughly nice chaps!
