4 Nox Sensors??

Hi - does anyone know how many Nox sensors are on a 1.6 FSI sport please? My Engine Management light came on a few months ago and I was told it was the Nox sensor at £400. It was replaced and I've done about 500 miles since. The light came on again on friday and it is back in the garage. They rang today to say it was the Nox sensor at £400! I mentioned that I had it replaced a few months ago and was it under warranty. They seemed a bit taken aback and said it would be under warranty if it was the one they replaced but there are four on the car so it was probably one of the others.

I'm a little bit suspicious. If it really has got four then I'm afraid much as I love her she will have to be sold after she is mended because I only do about 6,000 miles a year and it is just going to be too expensive to keep if I have another two to go after this one.

Many thanks, Teresa x

Well, I think someone is pulling your plonker - there is a single NOX sensor in the FSi (and a single control unit - the box on the floor under the passenger compartment), as well as a lambda sensor.

Thing is, neither of the units cost any where near £400 either - the sensor is arounf £175 and the control box is about £130 - even the lambda sensor for the |FSi is only £270 and this is the most expensive part of the emissions system.

I think that firm words and a firmer stance need to be taken here.

Cheers,

Mike

hi Teresa to the best of my knowledge there is only one nox sensor and one lambda probe.as for £400 they are having a giggle.i think even genuine ones are £118 and £175 respectively. the labour involved is small (unless they are charging you for diagnostics-Audi wanted £130 to scan mine!).
the independent mechanic i use only recommends Audi nox and lambda probes for the fsi a2's due to the sensitivity of the engine management system. if it was an Audi probe or sensor it would come with 24 month warranty. i know one member on here that has his engine management light come on after about 200 miles-my guy scanned it and it was saying lean mixture-pointing to air leak or lambda probe. but in his opinion the readings from the probe seamed odd---so dug deeper and then found a crack in the gas egr valve pipe. so this is letting air into the exhaust causing the wrong readings. so i would see if you can find someone that really knows how to use and interpret vag com data.
hope this helps mike ps where are you we may have someone here that can help?

sorry for the duplicated advice it wasn't there when i started---must type faster!!

Thanks your all your replies. I thought they were trying it on. I have had suspicions about them on a number of occaisions and just won't go there again. I suspect that its an assumption that because I'm a girl I won't ask questions. What they don't know is that in my younger day I used to do all the servicing on my first car (Mk 2 Escort :) myself armed only with a Haynes manual. I know quite a bit about cars but the A2 is a bit too high tech for me to want to play about with.

If they continue with the there are four story when I go to pick it up then I will ask them to show them to me - that should be fun.

I suspect that given the age it might be something else causing the problem like the coil or a split somewhere like Mike said. I am in Norwich so any recommendations of reliable VAG specialists in Norfolk/Suffolk would be very gratefully received.

Thanks again, Teresa x

Theresa, let us know how it goes and good luck!

Just to point you in the right direction, the Nox sensor is screwed into the exhaust system, roughly in line with the passenger front seat and the hand brake.
The sensor is tucked up between the exhaust and the alu heat sheild, but is easily visable. It looks a bit like a spark plug with a wire coming out of it.

Ggrrrrr!

Hi - just an update.

Well I went to pick the car up and presented with a £400 bill for replacement of Nox sensor. I explained about having it replacaed in april and being told that there are four. They went away for a long time and eventually came back to say that last time it was apparently the Nox ECU at £400, not the sensor itself and this time it is the actual sensor.

I'm not impressed and made that clear but they really couldn't care less and it was pay the bill if you want the car back.

Does anyone know the difference and what the Nox ECU is please? I'm still not convinced and although definately won't be going there again I may take if further if they are taking the mick. In any event I think I am going to have to very sadly sell the car and buy something that isn't so technically advanced. :(

Many thanks, Teresa x

Pff, there is no nox sensor ECU afaik. There is only one main ECU that reads the output from all the sensors that are engine related and plug into it, and it's a lot more expensive. The problem is that if they've already worked on the car, you're kind of in a tight spot and you'll have to pay up to get it back.
But you can ask to see all the receipts and more important the old part replaced. They should have asked you if you are ok whit them doing the work, but i'm not familiar with the british trading standards procedures.
It's a shame that a bad experience with a band of "thiefs" will make you miss out on the pleasures of owning an A2.:( It's quite a sturdy car once you take care of all the usuall gremlins. The nox amd lamda sensors, cats and other such things are all standard on most of the modern cars, and you're certainly going to run into them again...

Teresa, see my first reply - I mentioned a control unit, this is the CU in ECU and as I said, it costs around £130 and is simply screwed to the floor, so isn't a big job to replace it.

They are taking the p1ss here - tell them as such and get trading standards involved - see what they do then.

Cheers,

Mike

You should be going back, to ask for money back!

Mkie is right, you need to get back to them and tell them they can't take you for a ride or you're going to name and shame and get trading standards involved.

If they replaced parts, you can ask for the see the old part and at least get the exact part number of the item they replaced. The invoice should clearly show what part was replaced, how much for the part, then a separate labour charge. Every garage I've been to has sat me down to explain line by line in the invoice before asking for the money.

Thanks

Hi - they did show me the invoice from the previous one and it does show replaced NOX ECU (part number A036 906 263C) whilst this one says replaced Nox sensor (part number A8Z0 906 261). So it does look like they have replaced a different part each time. It is the diagnostic and labour they have stung me for - £288 for the first one and £240 for the second one. The parts are shown as £97 and £116 respectively.

It does point out that they did a complimentary wash and vacuum!

I suppose that is the problem of using a main dealer and I need to find a good VA specialist now I think. I will go back to Audi though and point out that they are taking the p' and that I will be referring to trading standards. I did explain that I wouldn't be coming back to them again (it is due for a Cam belt and service) but they really were not bothered at all. I think they are more interested in the business customers, well knickers to them! :)

Thanks again for all your advice though - I really don't want to get rid of her as I absolutely love her - its my second A2 and I've not driven a better car. I just need to find a garage that won't try to rip me off.

take care, Teresa x
