How do you remove the gear knob ?

How do you remove the gear knob? is it a simple case of turning anti clockwise?

Pull the gaiter free from the console - it is clipped in around its base.
Lift the gaiter up so that it exposes the underside of the gear knob.
Here you will see a metal clip (similar to a jubilee clip) holding the knob on the splined shaft. It cannot be undone as it's been crimped in place. I had to use a hammer and chisel/screwdriver to remove this clip.
Once this is removed the knob will slide upwards straight off the shaft.

For refitting, I used a cable tie to secure the knob back in place. This seems perfectly adequate as I can't pull the knob off.

Don't drink drive! Not only is it socially unaceptable, it also harms A2's.

hi mal, I've also been considering the alloy gear knob from VAG parts is it the one that's labled as "New aluminium gear knobs with black leather gaiter" on the site? The A2 one is said to be of a similar style to the one shown... do you know how it differs? I'm also a bit of an novice with taking bits off and putting bits on so any advice or hints would be greatfully revieved! cheers mate!

I'm awaiting a reply from martyn to see if it is a direct replacement or if there's a bit of adapting involved, I think its a simple swap but im just checking. Yes thats the 1 I was looking at. The price is £93 then you have vat and shipping on top of that, but as im ordering a few things im hoping the shipping costs will be cheaper.

Once I get my new one i'll post some pics of how to remove the old 1 and fit the new 1, which should help you out.

The only awkward part was removing the original crimped securing clip. Once this was done, the rest was plain sailing.
The new knob we fitted was was a genuine Audi spare (red instead of black) and we didn't have any issues with compatibility etc, so can't help you there unfortunately.
