The Baby Boom Box Project

Okay folks, going back to my 90s experiences here. Got the car (A2 TDI with Red Leather, and a few other extras, mega mileage, but cleaner than it by rights deserves to be).

Plans as follows:

  • New wheels - Nothelle Classics - Done by Me!
  • Winter Wheels - A1 16" with Pirelli Winter Tyres, courtesy of Rich Hall
  • Upgrade head unit to something a bit more interesting - Changed ideas on head unit
  • Upgrade speakers to something special - Cancelled, adding Bose instead.
  • Add Denon DCA800 Amplifier (6-channel, 100w per channel) - Cancelled, as above
  • Add bass bin - Cancelled, as above
  • Upgrade to Double Din - Done by Timmus
  • Upgrade to Bose - Done by Timmus
  • Cruise Control - Done by Timmus
  • Upgrade head unit to something more modern - Fitted a Symphony III with 6 CD Changer from A3. Coded and pushed into slot by Timmus - Needs a good few hours of dremmel work to fit flush with dash
Then re-done with an RNS-E Unit
  • Add some sort of SatNav device - Done by me (10" Android Tablet with 4G)
Re-Done courtesy of Timmus and WOM Automotive with an RNS-E
Re-Redone by Timmus and myself, by upgrading to RNS-E Mk2 (193b unit) - install by me, firmware update by Timmus
  • Clean up the paintwork
  • Remap - Although it has got 194k miles on the engine, so is it worth it? - Done by Yorkshire Remaps, subsequently found a tuning box fitted, which makes for some interesting readings...
    Re-remapped by Timmus
  • Colour DIS - Now fitted by Timmus!
  • Rear cup holders (lol - I can't afford them!)
  • Fit proper TDi front undertray
  • Fit fog lights - Done by Timmus
  • Red Leather Dashboard - Bit of a dream this one, to match the red interior
  • TT Red Leather Front Seats - Trying to find a set of Basketball Stitch red leather seats...
  • Audi Legends Begonia MF Steering wheel (from A1) - Fitted by Tom (Timmus)
  • Audi Legends Begonia gear gaiter (again from A1) - Fitted by Me!

One question - What sized speakers will fit? I assume 6" main drivers, but what size are the tweeters, and any room for a third (4" drivers) anywhere?

nothing without adapters or taking an existing one and then butchering. With effort you can fit a real 170mm driver in place, but it's not easy. And there's no space for a mid, either.
27TFFNs fit if I remember correctly, I think it's a 50mm dia hole.

That's a bummer :( I'll have a look around, see what I can get. What adapters are needed, and if so - what size are you looking at then?

I'll be dropping 170mm drivers in, probably 2.5" mids... let's see. Have to get the new garage clear first before I can think about the A2 much.

As promised, pics of the wheels - I'll upload some ones of the whole car once I've managed to get time to clean it

16s, now noticeably less clunky drive. First 100 or so miles, very impressed, although it was a VERY tight fit, and I'm sure the brake pads are slightly grazed...

Bigger photos please :)

Do you mean that the centre hub of the wheel is grazing on the back of the brake pad? I had a similar issue when I had some S3 wheels fitted previously with new brake pads. I just used an angle grinder to shave a mm or two off the area that was making contact.

Remind me again what size the wheels are?

That's it Steve, it's outer edge of the inner ring. We did a similar thing to the outside of the pads, but after a few miles I think it's probably ground itself down. The thing I'm trying to find at the moment is a load of proper Audi wheel bolts, as the old wheels that were on it (Wolfrace 17s) used some specialist bolts and although they fit the new wheels, if I sell the Wolfrace ones they'll need to go with them.

The new ones are 16"s, it's not the original set that I was talking about a while ago, as they were 5x112s and too wide, these ones are the OEM ET and tyre size for an A2, but as we've discovered small discrepency on the central hub size.

No bigger photos until I've cleaned the car though, as it's currently disgusting, and will get more so tonight as I've got to go to Blackpool.

I'v got a loaf of oem wheel bolts and a set of Audi locking wheel bolts here. Will do them at a good price, pm me if they are any good to you.

So, more things done/plans updated in the last few weeks.

First of all, had a good evening chat with Timmus about plans, and modified some of them to suit finances/likely outcomes. As a result of the meeting, the non-oem stereo route has now been chucked in favour of adding BOSE and then upgrading the head unit. I've managed to secure a nice Symphony II+ from an A4, which will need a bit of dremel work, but has been done before, so fingers crossed. Tom is coming over at the weekend to do a double-din swap-over from GG, upgrade to BOSE and fit my cruise control.

The Nothelles have been fitted now for a couple of weeks, will give her a good clean over the weekend and get some decent photos up here. Ride wise they're very nice, slightly less crashy than the 17s, and quieter, though is probably down to the tyres rather than the wheels themselves.

Finally, a couple of weeks ago on the way up to Washington I dropped in to see Yorkshire Remaps in Leeds and they did a remap on the Baby Boomer. Not certain exactly what figures I'm getting pre/post remap, but it certainly pulls a lot better up the hills on motorway running now, and I hit 80.8*mpg on the way back from Washington (170 motorway/A1 miles). I'm going to write up a full review separately.

Will report back during the weekend - going to have a look at a written off sport this evening locally, cheap as chips.

*Note - this was according to the on-board computer, which is WAAAYYY out.

This weekend's progress

 So, a great weekend of progress thanks to Tom's (Timmus) hard work (I supplied tea... to myself).
He managed to fit cruise control, swap dashboards to a double din, fit BOSE, add fog lights and give lots and lots of advise to a newbie owner, fit cruise control for MrBroons as well, and all in three days.

A few pics from the weekend ... More to follow when I get the chance for a camera.

Today's thoughts:

Red Leather dashboard is becoming a goer possibly. I've sourced a beaten up, but complete double din dashboard for a reasonable price, which I am taking to a local trimmer tomorrow to get a quote for trimming up in the correct leather. Dependent on price, might get him to refresh the red leather on the seats as well as they're suffering a bit from use (it HAS done 195k miles...)

Awaiting glovebox from Steve, which would probably form part of this.

You can get quite inventive with the trimming

I've got my speedo bezzel at an upholsterers at the moment. Not quite brave enough (or deep enough pockets) to do the whole dash.

Your worn leather seats can be recolonised at a much cheaper price than replacing leather and will have a similar end result.
