So not the end of the A2 then...

Just got this from the Telegraph's website:

VW Group cutback claims are 'totally unfounded'
(Filed: 07/09/2002)

Volkswagen Group members have reacted strongly to a recent report that six cars are to be dropped from the group's current model line-up, writes Daily Telegraph/Lex Young Motoring Writer of the Year, Matt Bee.

An article in last week's Autocar magazine nominated VW's Lupo and Beetle, Seat's Arosa and Alhambra, Skoda's Superb and Audi's A2 for the axe. The source of the story was an exclusive interview given by VW Group chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder to the German publication Automotor und Sport, in which he "outlined his vision" for the company. However, it appears that something of his vision was lost in Autocar's translation.

Cathie Bell of Skoda UK said: "These claims are totally unfounded and are potentially commercially damaging to the Skoda brand." She drew attention to the level of Skoda's investment in its flagship model with a new purpose-built factory at Kvasiny in the Czech Republic, and the subsequent enrolling of 3,000 new employees; it seems the recently launched Superb is here to stay.

A VW spokesman, meanwhile, said that the "axing" of the Beetle had been forecast for 2010, which is the end of the vehicle's shelf-life anyway, and added that the Lupo's future had not been discussed. Seat said much the same thing about the Lupo's sister car, the Arosa, and the Alhambra people carrier, while Audi pointed out that every one of the 50,000 A2s built annually for Europe was finding a home, and that the future of the model had not been decided.
